IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN SNAIL
There are several factors that promote and also hinder the smooth operation of a snail farm. When these factors are not put into consideration, your snail farming venture may become a disaster.
The following factors are some common factors to consider if you want to be successful in Snail Farming in Nigeria.
1. SOIL
2. TEMPERATURE/HUMIDITY
3. WIND DIRECTION.
4. STOCKING
1. SOIL: Soil is one of the most vital things to consider when starting snail Farming in Nigeria. While there are claims of snail farmers who breed snails without any soil, I can tell you that soil forms a major part of snail's habitat especially the Giant African Land Snail family. It represents about 95% of snail's dominant center of activity. If the soil is bad or contaminated, your snails will be affected adversely. Having a healthy soil in a snail pen is a vital prerequisite in setting up a good snail farm.
The soil composition, water content, soil texture all play great role in what determines a good soil for a snail farm. Let me remind you that not every soil is ideal for your snail habitat. The recommended soil for use is loamy soil. Loamy soil is rich in organic components.
Snails carry out most of their activities in the soil provided for them in the farm or pen such as laying of eggs, growing of a healthy shell, etc.
First of all, snail shell is made up of calcium derived primarily from the soil and secondary from Calcium-rich feed sources.
Secondly, Snails also absorb water from the soil which cater for most of their water needs aside water bowls set aside for them in the pen or farm.
More so, Snails also dig the soil to lay their eggs. The importance of a good and healthy soil to your snail farm can not be overemphasized.
Unfortunately, many people venture into snail Farming without learning the ropes. This is a su***de mission even if you don't plan to make money from snail Farming, don't plan to loose money.
