Sixty-six years ago, on October 1, 1960, the green-and-white flag rose into the Lagos sky for the very first time. It signaled more than the departure of a colonial power; it was a profound declaration that over 250 distinct ethnic nationalities, bound by arbitrary borders, would write their own destiny together.

Independence was never just a date on a calendar. It was purchased through the tireless agitation, intellect, and courage of everyday market women, labor unionists, students, and founding leaders who insisted that self-determination was a fundamental birthright.

Yet true nationhood is not delivered on the day a flag changes hands—it is built in the decades that follow.

Nigeria’s journey has never been smooth. It has carried the grief of civil conflict, the strain of political turmoil, the weight of economic hardship, and the quiet sacrifices of citizens who wake up every morning to create opportunity out of scarcity. But through every trial, the heartbeat of this nation has remained unchanged: its people.

The green in our flag was never just about fertile soil; it represents the perennial renewal of our youth, our unmatched hustle, and our refusal to break. The white is not an absence of struggle; it is an enduring commitment to peace and unity across every tongue and faith.

Patriotism is not pretending everything is perfect. Real patriotism is loving this nation enough to hold it accountable, care for one another, and protect the promise of what we can become.

Today is not merely a day to celebrate survival. It is a day to recommit to building a Nigeria where justice thrives, talent is rewarded, and no child’s future is limited by where they were born.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. 🇳🇬
