Simple explanation
If you have the Rh protein → you are Rh positive (Rh⁺)
If you don’t have the Rh protein → you are Rh negative (Rh⁻)
So when someone says blood group O⁺ or A⁻, the plus (+) or minus (–) sign is the Rh factor.
---
Why is Rh factor important?
1. Pregnancy
If a mother is Rh negative and the baby is Rh positive, the mother’s body can see the baby’s blood as “foreign” and start producing antibodies.
This can affect the baby, especially in future pregnancies.
Doctors prevent this problem by giving an injection called RhoGAM (anti-D injection).
2. Blood transfusion
A person who is Rh negative should not receive Rh positive blood, because their body will react to it.
3. Matching partners’ blood groups
It doesn’t stop marriage or relationship, but doctors check it early in pregnancy to avoid future complications.
