**Back to Learning Mode**

**4 Ways Parents Can Help Their Child Transition from Holiday Fun to Academic Success**

Holidays are over and schools have resumed for the Third term of the 2024/2025 session.

Now that school activities and other learning activities are about to begin, how can you help your child as a parent transition from the holiday play mode to learning mode?

1. Set Goals and Celebrate Progress.

*Set achievable goals*: Help your child set and work towards achievable goals, both short-term and long-term.

*Celebrate progress*: Acknowledge and celebrate your child's progress, no matter how small.

*Create a reward system*: Establish a reward system that motivates your child to learn and achieve their goals.

2. Create a Positive Learning Environment

*Designate a learning space*: Create a dedicated learning space that is comfortable, quiet, and free from distractions.

*Establish a routine*: Establish a consistent daily routine that includes time for learning and homework.

*Minimize distractions*: Minimize distractions during learning time, such as turning off the TV or putting away electronic devices.

3. Show Interest and Support

*Show genuine interest*: Be genuinely interested in your child's learning and ask them about their interests and passions.

*Offer support*: Be available to help your child with their learning, whether it's answering questions or providing guidance.

*Encourage curiosity*: Encourage your child to ask questions and explore their curiosity.

4. Allow them to Rest

*Give room for other activities outside academics: It could be something that involves them learning a skill of interest. This would help prevent them from being overwhelmed.

*Spend Quality Time with Them

This could happen by taking evening walks with them, creating family play routines like playing scrabbles, chess or other educational games.

*Create room for them to talk to you

Children like to talk to their parents when they are sure to get their attention: Spare at least 15-20 minutes daily to listen to them talk about their school, friends, teachers, daily activities and the likes.

5 Things to Avoid Worrying About as a Mother When Parenting a Toddler.

1. Mess and Chaos

Toddlers can be messy, but it's a normal part of their development. They are naturally curious and love to explore their environment. Mess and chaos are inevitable, but they can be managed with patience and a cleaning routine. Instead of getting frustrated, focus on giving age appropriate teaching to your child about cleanliness and responsibility rather than stressing your mind about perfection.

2. Perfect Parenting

When it comes to parenting, trust me nobody is perfect, and it's okay to make mistakes. Parenting is a learning process, and you'll grow and improve with time. Focus on doing your best, and don't be too hard on yourself when things don't go as planned.

3. Comparison to Others

Every child is unique, and comparisons can be unfair and stressful for you as a parent and even your child. Focus on your child's individual strengths, weaknesses, and needs. Celebrate their progress and achievements, no matter how small. Every child develops at their own pace, and comparisons can be unfair and stressful.

4. Minor Setbacks

Toddlers will have tantrums, accidents, and setbacks – it's all part of the learning process. Stay calm, patient, and consistent in your response to these setbacks. Use these opportunities to teach your child important life skills, such as self-regulation and problem-solving.

5. Not Doing Everything Yourself

It's okay to ask for help when you need it – from your partner, family, friends, or professionals. Prioritize your own well-being and delegate tasks when possible. Focus on what's truly important, and don't be afraid to say "no" to non-essential tasks.

Five engaging activities for teaching reading in an ESL classroom:

1. The ABC Technique

*Objective:* Improve reading comprehension and collaboration skills.

**Practical Use**

- Divide students into four groups (A, B, C, D) and assign each group a section of the text.
- Have each group read their section and discuss the main ideas, supporting details, and vocabulary.
- After 10-15 minutes, re-group students so that each new group has one member from each original group (A, B, C, D).
- Have each student share their section's main ideas with the new group, and then have the group discuss and summarize the entire text.

2. Popcorn Reading

*Objective:* Improve fluency, intonation, and listening skills.

*Practical Use:*

- Choose a text that is engaging and challenging for your students.
- Have students sit in a circle and choose one student to start reading aloud.
- At a designated point (e.g., a sentence or paragraph), the reading student says "popcorn"+ name of the next student to read and passes the reading to another student.
- Continue this process around the circle, encouraging students to listen attentively and respond when called upon.

3. Picture It

*Objective:* Improve comprehension, visualization, and creativity.

*Practical Use:*

- Choose a descriptive text that lends itself to visualization (e.g., a narrative or poetic passage).
- Have students read the text and then draw a picture that represents their understanding of the passage.
- Encourage students to include key details, characters, and settings in their drawing.
- Allow students to share their drawings with the class, explaining their artistic choices and how they relate to the text.

4. Character Role-Plays
*Objective:* Improve comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills.

*Practical Use:*

- Choose a text with well-developed characters and dialogue (e.g., a play, novel, or short story).
- Assign students roles from the text and have them prepare for a role-play activity.
- Set up the classroom to resemble the setting of the text, and have students act out a scene or scenario.
- Encourage students to stay in character, using dialogue and actions to bring the text to life.

5. The Predictions Game

*Objective:* Improve comprehension, critical thinking, and creativity.

*Practical Use:*

- Choose a text with an engaging plot or mystery (e.g., a novel, short story, or article).
- Have students read a portion of the text, stopping at a cliffhanger or turning point.
- Ask students to predict what will happen next in the story, encouraging them to use evidence from the text to support their predictions.
- Have students share their predictions with the class, discussing similarities and differences in their ideas.
- After finishing the text, have students reflect on their predictions and how they compared to the actual outcome.

These activities aim to make reading classes more engaging, interactive, and fun for ESL students.
