HOW LETTERS ENTERED MATH

Long time ago, in the peaceful land of Mathland, life was sweet.
Only numbers lived there — doing plus, minus, times and divide without stress.
2 go greet 3, 5 go dey play with 10, everybody just dey live their best mathematical life.

Until one day… problem started.

From far away — inside one place called Alphabetica, some letters were restless.

Letter x vexed,
“Abeg, I’m tired of just spelling ‘xylophone’ and ‘extra’. I need more meaning in my life!”

y joined.
“Yes na! We letters want to blow too. Let’s enter math!”

But z was afraid... He said "what if we get hurt in Mathland?"
"Remember, there was news last week that 789 (seven ate nine)

But x and y atill insisted that they take the bull by the horn

So, x, y, and z packed their bags, jumped border, and boom — landed inside Mathland just like that.

The numbers shouted:
“Jesu! Who invited these people?”
“Why is x standing beside 2? What is 2x??”
“Somebody call security! Confusion don enter!”

But old man Equals calmed them down.
“Relax my people. These letters might be useful o. What if you don’t know a number — can’t they help you find it?”

x cleared throat.
“Exactly! You don’t know the number? No wahala — call me. I will stand in until you figure it out."

The numbers blinked.
“So you’re like... a substitute?”

“Something like that,” x grinned. “Na me dem dey call "variable."

From that day:

- x started representing unknowns
- y joined for graphs coordinates
- a, b, c helped in formulas
- Even Greek brothers like π (pi) and others carry themselves enter the matter

Mathland changed forever. It became complicated, yes — but also smarter and more interesting.

Now, any time student go shout:

"Why letters dey inside my maths?!”

x go just laugh, adjust him agbada and say,
“Because we sabi solve problems too.”

THE TALE OF THE LOST EQUALS

In the Kingdom of Mathland, everything was perfectly balanced. Numbers lived in harmony, ruled by the great symbol: Equals (=).

Equals had one job — to keep both sides of every equation fair and balanced. Whether it was 2 + 3 = 5 or 10 - 4 = 6, Equals made sure both sides matched.

But one day, Equals disappeared.

Chaos broke out.

7 + 2 started claiming it was greater than 8... E explain explain explain tayaaa, no evidence 🤣

Multiplication and Division argued constantly.
Even poor Zero felt useless — no one knew where to place him anymore.

Until one day, a young variable named x went searching. "We need Equals back," he said. "Without balance, nothing in Mathland works!"

x traveled through Addition Alley, passed Subtraction Street, crossed Fraction Forest, and finally reached Logic Mountain. There, he found Equals, tired and sad.

"Why did you leave?" x asked.

Equals sighed, "No one respected balance anymore. They kept changing one side of the equation and ignoring the other."

x nodded. "We’ve learned our lesson. We need you to keep things fair — to remind us that both sides must always match."

Equals returned, and peace was restored.

From that day on, whenever someone solved an equation, they whispered,
"Whatever you do to one side… do to the other!"

And Equals smiled.

A long time ago, in a place called Numerica, all the natural numbers lived in order along a street called NuNumb. They lined up just right, from smallest to biggest.

At the very top stood Number One (1) — small, simple, but proud. He wore a little crown and carried himself like a leader. Everyone called him “Number One,” and no one questioned it... until one day.

Number Two (2) marched up, looking frustrated.

"Why are you number one?" he asked. "I’m even. I can split into two equal parts. I’m balanced, smooth, neat. You? You’re odd."

One just smiled.

"Exactly," he said. "I’m odd. I don’t divide evenly. I don’t follow anyone else. I stand on my own. That’s what makes me strong. That’s what makes me first."

Just then, Number Three (3) joined the conversation, spinning playfully on one foot like a ballerina.

"Two, you know the truth," she said. "All the prime numbers — 3, 5, 7, 11 — they’re all odd. Odd numbers are special. They're bold. They stand apart."

Two folded his arms. "Well, I’m a prime too."

One nodded. "Yes, you are. The only even prime. You're the exception, not the rule. Every other prime? Odd. That tells you something, doesn’t it?"

Then Zero (0) strolled over, floating slightly above the ground like he always did. He was quiet, but when he spoke, everyone listened.

"I’m the great eraser," he said. "Multiply anything by me, and it disappears — gone. But One? One leaves numbers just the way they are. That’s identity. That’s power."

Suddenly, the imaginary number, i, floated in with a twirl and a wink.

"You think odd is strange?" i said. "Try being imaginary. I’m not even on the number line. But One gets it. Sometimes, to lead, you have to be different. You can’t blend in. You have to stand out."

One looked around at the others.

"If you want to be safe," he said, "be even.
If you want to lead, be odd.
If you want to fit in, be even.
If you want to stand out, be odd.

YOU HAVE TO BE ODD TO BE NUMBER ONE

Thank You eˣ

Dear eˣ,
You're really one of math’s best hacks.
When we need to find your slope,
You make it easy—there’s no hope
Of getting lost or feeling stuck,
Because your rule is just good luck.

Your derivative is still just you,
No long steps, no tricks to do.
And when we integrate as well,
You stay the same—that's really swell!

You show up in so many things—
Like science, growth, and money things.
You help us solve without much pain,
No need to twist or use the brain.

While other functions change their form,
You stay calm, you are the norm.
So thank you eˣ, you're so kind,
You make math easier on the mind!
