CONSULTING THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR
One of the personnel that is sometimes, if not most times, not approached by students within the school system is the school counsellor, who is trained to help students by providing lots of services that meet their growing needs & optimum development. Amongst these services include career counselling, academic services & personal-social services.
During career counselling, the counsellor is able to guide students using well established theories of vocational development & techniques including administering some vital tests & providing necessary informations to the student on his or her chosen career.
Although it seems harmless for students to choose their careers without consulting the school counsellor or a career counsellor yet, consulting a career counsellor during or before career decision would be of great benefit to the student.

DREAMS AND CAREER PATH
According to Ken Gaub, a dream is what is permanently fixed in your mind, the picture of yourself as you will be in future.
In finding your career ("where you belong"), it is always important to ask yourself, what your dreams were when you were much younger and what they are now. I heard the popular musician BANKY W say in an interview, he studied Engineering back in school but he had always dreamt of music and had passion for music & today, you wouldn't be wrong to say he is fulfilled in what he's achieved living his dreams. Ive also heard a couple of other popular figures in our society admit the same.
As parents or guardians, listening to your children or ward is vital, to know their dreams & help them fulfill them. In later stages of their lives, you will be glad at their achievements, including the accolades & credits they'll give to you.

Some of the greatest assets of children when choosing the right career include parents and teachers. This is because, parents have watched their children grow from cradle, can tell who they are, what they can do & cannot do. They know & can tell their aspirations as they grow through the life stages. All these are helpful insights that can assist in proper career guidance.
Teachers also have the opportunity to know these children as students under their care. They can tell a few things about them including their abilities, temperament and personal skills. These can also help teachers guide students towards choosing the right career.

It was exciting having a career talk with students of a certain secondary school yesterday. The fascinating moment came when I requested them to write in a piece of paper their career choice & at least 2 reasons why they choosed that career. It was clear to me at this point that there was a challenge here as it seemed an uphill task. It was quite interesting & enlightening all through. Later, I had to go through what they all wrote & discovered that they all needed further assistance. This is why we do what we do

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAREER
As children grow through the life stages & schooling, there comes a remarkable point in their lives where they have to choose what they want to be in future, the job or occupation they want to do for the rest of their lives or for a significant period of their lives. This decision is called their career choice decision. And plays a significant role in their onward development through the life stages as noted by a German Psychologist, Erik Erikson. This decision has a role to play in their identity formation (the who am I question) and also their easy transition into adulthood.
A lot of factors influences children at this point in their lives including parents, peers, the society, personal factors & several biases upon which "the student" may anchor his/her career choice on. However, it is important to seek further professional guidance in making one's career choice by enlisting the service of a career counselor who is trained to guide such student through. Choosing a career requires careful guidance as it has every possibility to affect other stages of life as the individual goes through the lifespan.

ON CAREER
There is something called occupational multi-potentiality, that is, each individual has the potential for success and satisfaction in a number of occupations.
People differ in abilities, interests and personalities. They are qualified, by virtue of these characteristics, each for a number of occupations.
So, as a student, when choosing your career, limiting yourself to a particular career will not be to your advantage. This has kept a number of people still awaiting admission into higher institution. Instead, consider other career options that suits you, your abilities & also fulfills you. This way, you stand a better chance to achieve your goals.

The Career School is a school where we help students especially those in secondary schools with issues related to their career decision. Our objective is to help students make the right career decision by providing the necessary assistance possible, through trainings on career, career talks, conferences, posts etc. This is owing to the importance of this very decision & its impact on the individual. We will gladly welcome suggestions, supports and other things relevant to this course. Thank you.
