PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN IN THE DIGITAL AGE:
An Advisory to Parents of Brixtonn Schools.
Dear Esteemed Parents and Guardians,
At Brixtonn Schools, the health, growth, and safety of our children are our top priorities. In todayโs digital world, it is important for parents to carefully guide childrenโs use of smartphones, the internet, and online games.
Research shows that early and unsupervised exposure to screens can affect attention, sleep, emotional control, and creativity.
Even some of the people who built todayโs technology limit their own childrenโs access. For example, Bill Gates delayed giving his children phones until age 14, while Steve Jobs limited tablet use, he rather encouraged reading, family discussions, and hands-on activities. Technology ethicist, Tristan Harris also warns that many apps and games are designed to keep children engaged for long periods, which can be harmful to young minds.
We have noticed that some children are playing Roblox, an online game. While it may seem harmless, Roblox carries several risks for children such as:
- Exposure to inappropriate content โ some games or chat messages may include violence or adult themes.
- Online predators โ children can be contacted by strangers pretending to be friends.
- Addictive gameplay โ the game is designed to keep children playing for long periods, which can affect sleep, studies, and real-life activities.
- In-game purchasesโ children may spend money without fully understanding the consequences.
- Cyberbullying โ interactions with other players can lead to teasing, bullying, or negative social experiences.
To support healthy development, WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE parents to limit online games and screens, and guide children towards screen-free activities, such as:
- Reading
- Storytelling, or board games
- Drawing, crafts, or building projects
- Learning Musical instruments
- Outdoor play, sports, and nature exploration
- Music, dance, or drama activities
- Family discussions, cooking, or shared chores
- Educational experiments and hands-on learning
At Brixtonn Schools, we believe technology should support learning, not replace healthy childhood growth.
We urge parents to:
โ Delay personal smartphone ownership for young children
โ Supervise and monitor internet and game use
โSet device-free periods during meals, before bedtime, and for creative play
โ Encourage engaging, real-world activities that develop social, creative, and problem-solving skills.
Together, we can help children grow healthy while being balanced and responsible in a digital world.
The above information formed part of our discourse with our girls today as our guest speaker, Retired Chief Matron Mrs. Esther Isang graced our gathering.
