You're born afraid of just two things: falling and loud noises. Every other fear—spiders, public speaking, rejection—you picked up along the way. 🧠

Psychologists have long studied this. Infants startle at sudden loud sounds and show a natural aversion to heights as soon as they can crawl. But fear of snakes, darkness, or flying? Those are learned, often through conditioning, observation, or cultural transmission.

Babies don't fear the dark. They learn it. They don't fear strangers—they learn to. Studies also show that children who don't have negative experiences with spiders or snakes often don't develop fear of them. This suggests that the majority of our fears are culturally and personally constructed.

That means it's possible to unlearn most fears—starting with the ones that don't actually protect us. 🪜🔊

KNOW YOUR PLACE
Ezra 1:1 ESV

In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia,

that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled,

the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia,

so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing:

Pay attention to lines 2 & 3.

God spoke through a man, a Prophet, about what He plans to do, and God stirred up the heart of another man, a king, to begin the process of fulfilling the prophecy.

This is often how God works: He uses people to disclose and deliver on His plans.

A prophet tells forth the will of God. But a king has executive authority to move human and material resources in the direction God wants to go.

Which one are you - A prophet or A King? Do you know what God plans to do, or do you have the institutional authority to move people and resources towards that plan?

Both are equally important in God's plan/kingdom. But understanding where one is is key to being relevant to God and His plan on earth.

Other people who played important roles in this scene are Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah.

In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years. Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. Daniel 9:2-3 ESV

: He led the spiritual and religious restoration of Jerusalem, teaching the Law of God and calling the people back to covenant obedience.

: He led the physical reconstruction of Jerusalem’s walls, organising the people, overcoming opposition, and restoring the city’s security.

All these men cooperated with God to fulfil His divine agenda. Five men across generations, one agenda.

Yes, it is September already - the beginning of the (so-called) "Mber months".

You may be feeling behind in your goals and endeavours and under pressure to speed up. Don't!!

May I remind you that growth doesn't have to be loud, fast, or dramatic. Keep showing up, keep moving, and trust the process.

You can grow slowly—and still win.

THE HEART

Jeremiah 17:9-10 ESV
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

From a biblical anthropology perspective, the heart is much more than the physical organ or the seat of emotions; it is the inner person, encompassing intellect, will, conscience, and affections. Thus, many activities that modern readers attribute to the mind are, in Scripture, attributed to the heart.

The Bible consistently portrays the heart as the centre of:
* Thinking (Mark 2:8)
* Reasoning (Luke 5:22)
* Understanding (Isaiah 6:10)
* Wisdom (Proverbs 16:23)
* Planning (Proverbs 16:9)
* Decision-making (Daniel 1:8; 2 Corinthians 9:7)
* Reflection (Ecclesiastes 1:13)
* Belief (Romans 10:10)
* Moral judgment (Romans 2:15)

The Bible also repeatedly uses expressions such as:
* "Said in his heart" (Genesis 17:17; Genesis 27:41; 1 Samuel 27:1; Ecclesiastes 2:1)

* "Reasoned in their hearts" (Mark 2:6–8; Luke 5:22)

* "Pondered in her heart" (Luke 2:19)

* "Thoughts of the heart" (Luke 2:35; Hebrews 4:12)

* "Imaginations of the heart" (Luke 1:51)

* "Out of the abundance of the heart" (Matthew 12:34)

The "heart" in the Bible refers to the inner/subconscious mind - the seat of programming (including beliefs, values, perspective, etc.) from where our lives are run on autopilot.

Proverbs 4:23 states, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life".

This timeless wisdom means you must protect your inner thoughts, feelings, and choices because they shape everything you do and experience.

FAITH vs FEAR: THE STATE OF THE MIND

Job 3:25: "For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, And what I dreaded has happened to me".

Fear is the mind emotionally preparing for what it does not want to happen; faith is the mind confidently preparing for what it trusts God to do.

There is actually an intriguing progression:
Fear → Expectation → Mental rehearsal → Emotional experience
while faith can operate as:
Faith → Expectation → Mental rehearsal → Courageous response

Whatever dominates the mind begins to influence how we interpret, anticipate, and respond to life.

Fear asks, “What if it goes wrong?”
Faith asks, “What if God is still at work?”

STRONG WORDS FOR THE WICKED
Job 20:4-10, 29 ESV

Do you not know this from of old, since man was placed on earth,

that the exulting of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment?

Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach to the clouds,

he will perish forever like his own dung; those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’

He will fly away like a dream and not be found; he will be chased away like a vision of the night.

The eye that saw him will see him no more, nor will his place any more behold him.

His children will seek the favour of the poor, and his hands will give back his wealth.

This is the wicked man’s portion from God, the heritage decreed for him by God.”
