DICLOFENAC SODIUM OR POTASSIUM ; WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU TAKE?

This question comes up a lot, especially the fact that both types are common in pharmacies.

So what exactly is the difference, and which one is safer?

Let’s break it down in this thread

Come with meπŸ‘‡

🏷️HOW FAST DO THEY WORK?

The two salts work differently in the body:

-Diclofenac Potassium: This is absorbs faster, start working faster and it is a better option for sudden pains like ;headaches, period pain, toothache, body pains, backache

-Diclofenac Sodium: Absorbtion is slower, onset of action is slower, and it is suitable for longer-lasting inflammatory pains because it is likely to also stay longer in the body
οΏ½Good option for arthritis, and chronic back pain

Now the big question πŸ‘‡

🏷️WHICH ONE IS SAFER DOR ULCER PATIENTS?

Let’s be very clear with this one because many people have been getting it wrong :οΏ½
Both diclofenac potassium and sodium can irritate the stomach and worsen an ulcer.

The reason is simple ; They remain the same NSAIDs, and the NSAIDs reduce protective stomach mucus. The salt form doesn't change that.

So if you have: ulcer, ulcer history, and frequent heartburn, be kind to yourself and avoid both unless your doctor approves.

Yes, there times when your doctor or pharmacist can give you Diclofenac, but in those times, they combine with other medications to prevent the effect of Diclofenac on your GI tract.

This is only done when the benefits outweighs the risk

🏷️What about people with high blood pressure?

Diclofenac in general can:οΏ½β€’ Increase blood pressureοΏ½β€’ Affect kidney functionοΏ½β€’ Reduce the effectiveness of some BP medicines

But between the two salts:
βœ”οΈ Diclofenac Potassium is preferred over diclofenac Sodium for hypertensive patients.οΏ½Why? It contains less sodium, and sodium can worsen blood pressure.

BUT…Even with this advantage, both forms should be used carefully if you have hypertension.

CAUSES OF BEARD BUMPS THAT YOU IGNORE

🍭Shaving with dull razors; A dull blade tugs at the hair instead of cutting it cleanly, leading to uneven cuts and increasing the risk of hair getting trapped under the skin.

It also causes more friction, which irritates the skin.

🍭Shaving too closely ; Cutting hair too close to the skin (or even slightly below the surface) makes it easier for the sharp ends of the hair to pierce back into the skin as they grow, especially in people with curly or coarse hair.

🍭Shaving against the grain ; This may give a smoother shave temporarily, but it forces the hair to be cut at an angle that makes it more likely to grow inward instead of outward, leading to ingrown hairs and beard bumps.

To prevent beard bumps;

🍭Use a sharp razor

🍭shave in the direction of hair growth, and

🍭avoid pressing too hard on the skin.

🍭Also, consider using a moisturizing shaving gel to reduce irritation.

HEAR ME OUT

Don't let anyone kiss your new born baby.

They could get infected with Herpes Simplex Virus and it's not curable.

Some adults carry Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1), the virus behind cold sores and it can be passed to babies even without visible symptoms.

In newborns, this virus can attack the brain, lungs, and liver.

It can lead to severe illness, long-term damage, or even de@th

And no, there’s no cure for it.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD DEWORMING BE DONE?

The frequency depends on factors like:
-The type of worms
-Age (kids need it more often)
-Local environment (rural areas with poor sanitation may need more frequent deworming)
οΏ½If you live in places where worm infection is common, deworming should generally be done every 6-12 months.

However, in high-risk areas with poor sanitation, more frequent deworming may be necessary. ( every 3-4 months).

The way to go is to consult a healthcare provider to determine the best deworming schedule for you and your family.

ONION : WHY YOU NEED TO EAT ENOUGH OF IT
Ever Wondered Why Onions Make You Cry?πŸ§…πŸ˜ We will talk about that, but let me tell you what happened yesterday at work…..

I was having a conversation with a patient, and in the middle of our talk, I casually suggested that she should eat more onions because of their amazing health benefits.

She looked at me like I just told her to drink engine oil.πŸ˜‚

And then she goes "I don’t eat onions,"

For a few seconds, I thought I misheard her.

And i asked her You don’t eat what for real or do you just eat it small? She made an X sign with her hand to tell me how serious.

The very thing that can naturally boost your immune system, protect your heart, improve digestion, and even keep your skin glowing?

As a health influencer, to be honest,

I got into a brief thinking mode and reminded myself that not everyone knows how powerful onions really are.

So I did what i would always do; I broke it all down for her.

And ofcourse, I thought to share the benefits with you too! 😁

But first, let’s address the big question:

Why do onions make you cry?

Keep reading, and you’ll never look at onions the same way again.

WHY DO ONIONS MAKE YOU CRY? (AND WHY THAT’S A GOOD THING!) πŸ§… πŸ”ͺ 😭

Ever chopped an onion and instantly felt like life was suddenly too hard? Lmao!πŸ˜‚ You are not alone, because I cry a lot.

The reason for that tear is simply because onions release a gas called
syn-Propanethial-S-oxide, which makes your eyes feel irritated and makes you tear up.

For some people Onion is the only thing that makes you feel emotional, and you probably don't like the ideaπŸ˜‚

But before you curse onions for making you emotional, here’s the hood side of those tears:

The same gas released is what gives onions their powerful antibacterial and immune-boosting properties.

But How Cna You Stop The Onion Tears?
οΏ½-You can try to chill the onion before cutting.οΏ½
-Using a super-sharp knife to reduce gas release.
οΏ½-Cut your onions close to running water to wash away the irritant.

Now that we’ve settled the crying part, let’s get into why onions deserve a prime spot in your meals.

Come with me πŸ‘‡

PEPTIC ULCER & H. PYLORI BACTERIA: WHAT IS THEIR RELATIONSHIP?

H. pylori is a bacteria that can cause peptic ulcer disease in your stomach and the first part of your small intestine called Duodenum.

The bacteria sits pretty in many people’s body without causing symptoms, but when it eventually decides to cause symptoms, they are usually severe and may be as complicated as posing a risk of stomach cancer.

This is especially possible when treatment is neglected or not done properly.

For H. pylori to colonize your body, 4 things must happen;

1β€’ It survives the acidic condition of the stomach

The bacteria has Urease activity and urease will break urea into carbon dioxide and ammonium.

When ammonium combines with water in your stomach, it produces a base β€œAmmonium hydroxide”

Remember what we were taught in primary school, that a base neutralizes an acid.

This produced base helps the bacteria to look stomach acid in the eye and say β€œYou got nothing on me β€œ 😭

If you have ever wondered why the acidic nature of the stomach doesn't hurt the bacteria, you just found your answer.

2β€’ Secondly, it moves towards your epithelial cells by using its flagella.

H. Pylori understands that if it remains at the epithelial surface of the stomach, it may need to keep battling with acid neutralization

Guess what it does?

Oga uses some of its flagella to move to the basal layer of the stomach, where the PH level is very close to 7.

Remember PH 7 is the neutral PH, so it stays there to calculate the next move

When we say complete your antibiotics, it's simply because we know what you are wrestling against.

3β€’ Thirdly, with the aid of adhesins, it attaches to your stomach cell receptors.

Guess why?

H. pylori knows that if it just stays at the basal layer without bonding with the stomach family, it can be kicked out by certain forces

One of those forces is when food is moving down the stomach or during gastric emptying.

Since Oga H.p has gained ground, it begins to show its true character in the house 😭

This is where number 4 comes in

4β€’ It releases toxins to cause tissue damage
The two majorly implicated toxins are;

-Vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA )
-Cytotoxin-associated gene A (cagA)

Once it reaches this stage, every other damage on the cells follows.

SYMPTOMS OF H.pylori INFECTION

Most times it's asymptomatic, but some common symptoms are ;

-Heartburn

-Abdominal pain

-Morning hunger

-Halitosis (bad breath )

-Diarrhea

-Nausea & vomiting

-Indigestion & bloating

-Loss of appetite

-Weight loss/gain

WHERE CAN IT BE FOUND?

-Saliva
-Teeth plagues
-Faeces
-Food and water
-Contaminated utensils

This is why it is transmitted via kissing and fecal-oral means, for people who don't practice proper hand washing after using the toilet.

WHAT CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF HAVING H.pylori INFECTION?

1β€’ Children are at higher risk; lost people got infected in childhood, however, were asymptomatic until later in life

2β€’ living in a crowded environment

3β€’ Poor sewer services and lack of clean portable water

4β€’living with an infected person

5β€’ Having a sexual partner who is infected

6β€’ Having multiple sexual partners

7β€’ Poor environmental hygiene and personal care

TREATMENT

The infection is treated with combination therapy, which will usually include antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole and symptomatic agents like Antacids.

Lifestyle modifications are also recommended

PREVENTION OF H.pylori infection

1β€’ Eat well-cooked food
2β€’ practice proper hand washing
3β€’Avoid unclean water
4β€’ Don't be served by people who don't wash their hands
5β€’ Advice and support your partner to treat the infection if they are infected

If you have a peptic ulcer, kindly seek the help of a healthcare provider for guided diagnosis and treatment.

This will save you stress, costs, and the associated pain.

03/05/2025

WHY DO PAIN MEDICATIONS CAUSE PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE?

The stomach is made up of certain substances that line its walls and help to protect it from bacteria and other microbes.

These protective agents also protect the walls from the secreted acids in the stomach.

One of the major protective agents in the stomach is Prostaglandin

It protects the stomach lining and also enhances the secretion of the stomach base to minimize negative acid impact.

Guess what these pain medications do?

On a normal day, these medications work by reducing the production of this protective agent (prostaglandin).

When they do this, they deny your stomach the benefit of being protected by Mr Prosta

When you take pain medications in the right doses, right frequency, and with food in your stomach, your risk of developing ulcers is reduced.

HOW YOU MAKE THEM STRIKE

1β€’ Taking them on an empty stomach increases the risk of peptic ulcer

2β€’Taking an overdose of these medications also increases your risk

3β€’Taking them for a long period increases your risk

4β€’Taking many of them at the same time (mixing drugs) increases your risk

Ladies who experience dysmenorrhea and have resorted to consistent pain medications without consulting a gynecologist may increase their risk of PUD.

Some people start their day with pain medications before even having breakfast.

Friends, this is a habit you need to cut, and here’s why.

Don’t get this wrong, pain medications are quite beneficial when taken correctly and by the right person.

If you have a peptic ulcer, it’s crucial to inform your pharmacist.

The reason is that there are specific pain medications designed not to harm the protective lining of your stomach.

Your pharmacist can easily provide these safer options for you.

Not only can your pharmacist provide special pain medications that won’t harm your stomach lining, but they can also add in a few other medications to counteract any damaging effects of the pain medications.

PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE: THE ACTUAL CAUSES AND REMEDIES EXPLAINED

It’s time to set the record straight.

Many people suffering from peptic ulcers wrongly blame pepper and fasting, when the true causes often lie elsewhere.

By understanding the real triggers, we can pave the way for more effective treatments and lasting relief.

In this thread, I will walk you through the specific causes of Peptic Ulcer Disease, and how the foods you eat truly impact your condition.

Come with me πŸ‘‡

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CAUSES

1β€’ H. Pylori bacteria

2β€’ Pain medications (NSAID class)

If you already have an ulcer, you have a third factor to deal with ;

3β€’ Ulcer-triggering foods.

Let’s start with the influence of food ;

KEY THINGS TO NOTE

1β€’ Ulcer is not caused by hunger

2β€’ Ulcer is not improved by eating plenty of food

3β€’ People who are light eaters are not the ones more likely to have peptic ulcer

4β€’ Drinking milk will not heal your ulcer, it might make it worse

HOW TO EAT WHEN YOU HAVE PUD

1β€’ Eat small portions at a time instead of large portions at once.

2β€’ Chew your food properly before you swallow; to exert less stress on your digestive tract

3β€’ Don’t rush your meal; you may increase the intensity of acid secretion and make your symptoms worse

4β€’ Don’t eat close to bedtime, unless you will forfeit sleeping at your usual time

5β€’ Don’t heavy meals as a way to relieve ulcers; this will give you the opposite effect.

FOODS THAT CAN IMPROVE PEPTIC ULCER

1β€’ Fiber-rich foods; both soluble and insoluble fibers have been shown to maintain a healthy gut.

Some sources of fiber are; apples, pears, whole grains, and oatmeal.

About 20-30g of dietary fiber is recommended daily and one medium-sized apple can give you about 4.7-5g of fiber

Combining this with other fiber-rich foods helps you hit your daily target.

2β€’ Use probiotics; probiotics are not curative agents for ulcers, but they help to lower the microbial load of H. pylori, and this reduces the severity of infection.

Apart from that, for people who overuse antacids, especially for a long period due to delayed ulcer cure, probiotics help to maintain the consistency of good bacteria that may have been tampered with due to overuse of Antacids.

They also help to minimize the side effects of some Antibiotics

3β€’ Eat Cayenne pepper; this pepper is also called Capsicum annum, and it contains an important antioxidant called Capsaicin.

Capsaicin helps to facilitate the healing of the ulcers in the stomach or duodenum.

The pepper is popularly known as Shombo in Nigeria.

4β€’ Eat sweet potatoes; these potatoes are rich in vitamin A and this gives them some healing properties

5β€’ Eat fruits like; Apple, papaya, bananas, and watermelon

6β€’For vegetables; eat carrots, spinach, dark leafy vegetables, green bean, etc.

7β€’ Consumption of cranberry; just like in the case of UTI, researchers have observed that the proanthocyanidin content of cranberry also helps to prevent attachment of H.pylori to the stomach walls.

8β€’ The curcumin content of turmeric has been studied to offer some protection against peptic ulcers induced by some pain medications (NSAIDs)

This is due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

The Zingerone content of ginger has also been studied to have a similar effect

Things like oranges, pineapples, onions, cucumber, cabbage, and red pepper can be eaten.

However, caution may need to be applied, and eating them at all depends on the severity of the ulcer.

If the ulcer is severe you can avoid them and make up with other nutrient sources until your ulcer is healed.

FOODS TO AVOID IN PEPTIC ULCER

1β€’ Alcohol; It reduces the consistentency of the stomach protective agent and irritates the stomach lining.

This makes the lining too weak to offer any protection to the stomach walls and eventually, inflammation occurs.

2β€’ Chocolate
3β€’ Coffee
4β€’ Caffeinated and carbonated drinks
5β€’Fatty meals
6β€’Highly spiced food
7β€’ Citrus fruits andβ€’
8β€’Minimize tomatoes intake
9β€’Milk; avoid taking it on an empty stomach and take it with caution
10β€’ Fried foods
11β€’ Beans

OBSERVING YOUR TOLERANCE

The treatment of ulcers has been difficult for many patients.

In practice, we record different experiences from different people when they eat similar foods.

While some patients can take vitamin C, some patients report a negative effect.

It is important to observe what foods or drinks that worsen your symptoms.

Your doctor can only tell you what may put you at risk and what may not. But you still have a role to play.

Take out 4 weeks and diligently modify your lifestyle, while taking your medications and you will surely note the difference.

Food plays an essential role in many health conditions and in peptic ulcer, it plays a huge role.

It is important to understand this and make informed choices.

In my next thread, I will walk you through how PAIN MEDICATIONS & H. Pylori bacteria cause Peptic Ulcer Disease.

For now, digest this and share it with your loved ones.

WHY DO PEOPLE SLEEP TALK?

Some people talk in their sleep. It might sound funny, weird, or even creepy. But why does it happen? Is it normal? Should you be worried?

Below is everything you need to know about sleep talking.

Sleep talking means saying things while you’re asleep, without knowing it.

It could be a few mumbled words, full sentences, or even loud shouting.

The person talking has no clue and won’t remember anything the next day.

It can happen at any time during sleep, whether you're in deep sleep or dreaming.

And sometimes, it sounds like the person is having a real conversation with someone who is not there.😳

It’s very common in kids. About 50% of children will talk in their sleep at some point.

Most of them grow out of it.
In adults, around 5–10% still sleep talk.

πŸ”‘ WHAT IS THE CAUSE?

Many things can trigger it:
- Stress and worry
- Lack of sleep
- Fever or illness
- Alcohol or drug use
- Feeling depressed
- Past trauma
- Certain medications

And in some cases, it just runs in the family 🧬

Sleep talking can also come with other sleep problems:

- Sleepwalking
- Night terrors (waking up screaming)
- Acting out dreams (called REM sleep behavior disorder)
- Sleep apnea (trouble breathing during sleep)

So sometimes, it’s just talking. But other times, it’s part of a bigger issue.

πŸ”‘ WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY WHEN THEY SLEEP TALK?

It depends. Sometimes it’s random words.

Sometimes it’s a full story.

Sometimes it’s shouting, crying, or even swearing.

But most of the time, it’s just nonsense. It doesn’t mean anything serious or personal πŸ˜‚

πŸ”‘ SHOULD YOU BE WORRIED?

In most cases, NAH. Sleep talking is harmless.

But if it’s happening a lot, or if it comes with strange movements, confusion, or memory problems, then it’s good to see a doctor or sleep specialist.

πŸ”‘ HOW TO REDUCE SLEEP TALKING

- Get enough sleep every night
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time daily
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine before bed
- Cut down on stress and anxiety
- Treat any mental health issues
- Avoid heavy meals before sleeping πŸ’€

These small habits can make a big difference.

If your partner or roommate talks in their sleep, try not to take what they say personally

They’re not aware of it. It’s just their brain talking without a filter.

FINALLY

In short, sleep talking is common and usually harmless.

But if it’s frequent, loud, or comes with other problems, it’s time to check it out.

Sleep should be quiet, but for some, it comes with plenty plenty talk

Have you seen someone express this before? How was that experience for you?
