Mistake #2: Taking Over Your Child’s Play.

When parents use play as therapy, it’s easy to focus so much on teaching that we forget to let the child play.

You don’t have to control every move, choose every activity, or show your child what to do next.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is follow their lead.
Let them explore.
Let them try.
Let them figure things out.

Your role isn’t to take over the play; it’s to join them, support them and create opportunities for learning.

✍️ Remember: Play is their language. Meet them where they are.

Dear parents, Educators & Therapists,

A child refuses to do an activity.
A learner suddenly becomes upset.
A child throws something, leaves the room, screams, or shuts down.

It can be easy to focus only on 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱.

Before asking, “𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩?”
ask, “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙩?”

🤷‍♂️ Was the task too difficult?
🤷‍♂️ Did something change unexpectedly?
🤷‍♂️ Was the environment overstimulating?
🤷‍♂️ Did they struggle to communicate what they needed?
🤷‍♂️ Were they tired, hungry, or dysregulated?

𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝘆. 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻. 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄.

The best way to support a child is not to do everything for them, but to 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝘁.

👍 Give them the opportunity to try.
👍 Guide when they need help.
👍 Step back when they can do it themselves.

Because every little attempt is practice for independence. And independence is built when we allow children to do, learn, make mistakes, try again, and succeed.

Don’t rescue every problem. Build their capacity to face it.
