ABSU LAW Clinic
Abia State University, Legal Clinic, Providing law enlightenment to the public and legal aids
The Abia State University Law Clinic visited the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Afara, Umuahia, Abia State.
As part of its core mandate of providing access to justice and clinical legal education, the visit gave students first-hand exposure to the criminal justice system. The aim was to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom knowledge and practical realities by allowing students to interact directly with inmates, appreciate the rehabilitative role of corrections beyond the purely punitive framework of criminal law, and deliver pro bono legal support to those in need.
During the exercise, students conducted structured interviews and offered counselling sessions. They listened attentively to the inmates’ experiences and challenges within the system, provided legal advice and counselling where appropriate, and explored possible interventions—including bail applications, appeals, and rights-based remedies—that could assist the inmates.
The visit was both successful and enlightening. It enhanced the students’ understanding of correctional practice, the human rights dimensions of criminal justice, and the real-world impact of legal aid, while instilling in them a deeper sense of professional responsibility to advance a justice system that rehabilitates as much as it punishes.
