🌍 Big Update: New U.S. B1/B2 Visa Bond Requirement Effective Now (January 2026) 🌍
As of January 7, 2026, the Trump administration has expanded the visa bond pilot program to 38 countries—a major shift for B1/B2 (business/tourist) visa applicants. To address high overstay rates, eligible travelers from these nations may now be required to post a cash bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000 during their consular interview. The bond is refunded upon departure from the U.S., but forfeited if you overstay.
This builds on enhanced vetting (e.g., deeper social media screening) and aligns with the expanded travel ban effective January 1, 2026, which already suspends new B1/B2 issuance for nationals of certain high-risk countries.
Key Impacts for B1/B2 Applicants:
Financial Barrier: Adds significant upfront cost—plan accordingly if your country is affected.
Case-by-Case: Not automatic; consular officers decide based on overstay data and individual risk.
Goal: Reduce overstays while allowing legitimate travel.
Affected countries include many with historically higher B1/B2 overstay rates (full list on travel.state.gov—recent additions feature nations like Venezuela and others in Africa/Latin America).
If you're applying soon, this could change your plans. At Vic Trish (victrish.com), we're helping clients pivot to stronger alternatives: Canada, UK, Australia, or Schengen options with smoother processes and no bonds.
