🎯 A dart in fashion design is a folded and stitched wedge of fabric that is used to shape a flat piece of material so it can conform to the natural curves of the human body. It is one of the most fundamental techniques in pattern making, allowing a two dimensional fabric to take on a three dimensional form around areas like the bust, waist, hips, and shoulders.

At its core, a dart removes excess fabric and directs fullness to where it is needed. It typically has two key parts: the dart legs (the stitching lines) and the dart point (the tip that aims toward a body contour, such as the bust apex). The intake, which is the width of the dart, determines how much shaping occurs.
