It feels instant, but your message actually travels through a small digital journey.

1. You write and send the email
Your email app passes the message to your email company’s computer system.

2. That system looks for the right address
It checks a global list on the internet to find which computer receives messages for the person you are emailing.

3. Your email is checked for safety
It is scanned to make sure it is not junk or harmful.

4. The message is sent to the receiver’s email company
Their computer system accepts the message.

5. It appears in the person’s inbox
They can now open, read and reply.
