PRESS RELEASE
The Directorate of Students with Special Needs, Students’ Union Government (SUG), University of Port Harcourt, successfully concluded its impactful radio engagement titled “Academic Phobia: Not Laziness”, aired on Friday, 26th February 2026 at Radio Uniport 88.5FM.
The program featured the Director of Students with Special Needs, Sen. Henry Ikechukwu alongside the Chief Press Secretary to the Directorate, Comr. Victoria Echezona, in an enlightening discussion addressing the widespread misconception that struggling students are merely lazy or unserious.
Speaking during the broadcast, Sen. Ikechukwu emphasized the importance of understanding the emotional realities behind academic struggles. He noted that while academic excellence remains a priority, institutions and stakeholders must also pay attention to the psychological well-being of students. According to him, fear-based environments can hinder performance and confidence, whereas supportive systems foster growth and resilience.
In her contribution, Comr. Echezona clarified the distinction between normal academic stress and academic phobia. She explained that while temporary stress before examinations is common among university students, academic phobia is marked by persistent fear, repeated avoidance of lectures or assessments, and emotional distress tied to academic responsibilities. She stressed that when such fear becomes a consistent pattern affecting attendance and performance, it should not be dismissed as mere lack of seriousness.
The discussion further highlighted contributing factors such as constant comparison, unrealistic expectations, financial pressure, harsh criticism, and fear of failure. The speakers noted that in many cases, what appears as laziness may actually be overwhelm or anxiety-driven avoidance.
Both representatives reiterated that discipline and standards are important, but psychological safety plays a critical role in academic success. They encouraged students to recognize patterns of academic avoidance and seek appropriate support when needed.
The Directorate further invites members of the University community to tune in to its weekly radio engagements EVERY FRIDAY at 12:15pm on Radio Uniport 88.5FM, as it continues to address critical issues affecting students.
