A few days ago, I overheard a conversation that stayed with me.

A mother looked at her son and said,

"You're so intelligent. I just wish school wasn't so difficult for you."

The little boy didn't argue.

He simply nodded.

That moment broke my heart.

Not because he wasn't smart...

But because somewhere along the way, he had started believing that struggling meant he wasn't capable.

And that's something I see far too often.

Children aren't born believing they're "bad at Maths."

They aren't born thinking English is too hard.

They aren't born afraid of exams.

Those fears grow slowly...

One confusing lesson.

One poor result.

One comparison.

One "Why can't you be like your cousin?" at a time.

But here's the beautiful thing.

Confidence can grow the same way.

One patient teacher.

One lesson that finally makes sense.

One "Well done."

One small win.

That's how potential is unlocked.

Not through pressure.

As an educator, I've learned that every child carries something special inside them.

Sometimes they don't need a different child.

"Can I tell you something that broke my heart?"

A parent once told me,

Something simple happened today, but I haven't stopped thinking about it.

I saw a mother duck leading her ducklings towards my garden.

As I walked closer, she paused.

Her eyes stayed on me.

She was alert.

She was intentional.

She was paying attention.

Her little ones, however, kept walking confidently into the garden.

That picture stayed with me all day.

Children flourish when someone is intentionally watching over their growth.

Not controlling every step.

Not shouting every instruction.

Simply being present.

As parents, we're often busy providing food, paying school fees, and meeting responsibilities.

Those things matter.

But our children also need our attention.

They need someone who notices when learning becomes difficult.

Someone who celebrates little improvements.

Someone who asks questions, listens patiently, and encourages them to keep going.

I've learned that children don't always need louder voices.

They need reassuring ones.

The mother duck reminded me that real protection isn't about keeping children from every challenge.

It's about staying close enough that they can face those challenges with confidence.

That's the kind of support every child deserves.
