Throw Back to when we had a literacy training session for parents with Mrs Ovedhe taking the lead.
Back in the days when many of us went to school we were taught our letters and we learnt to spell words.
Now in many schools Children are taught differently. They learn to read and write based on the sounds letters make whether they are single letters or a combination of letters to make a single sound. This method of learning to read and write helps to develop the children’s phoneme awareness and is called phonics. Once the code of reading has been cracked through phonics, children then have the ability to explore the length and breadth of literacy as a whole.

Some of the terminologies used are explained in the next lines

• Phoneme sounds like phonics, it is a sound as it is said eg /a/ as in apple
• Grapheme has the word graph in it and are symbols, just like how graphs are also visual representations of information. It is a sound as is written eg a,b,c
• Digraphs are two-letter Graphemes i.e 2 letters that work together to make one sound eg /ch/ as in chip
• Trigraphs are three-letter Graphemes i.e 3 letters that work together to make one sound eg. /scr/ as in scream
• Split Digraph are two vowels that work together to make a sound separated by a consonant eg /a-e/ as in bake.

At Play Academy we have seen children progress from picture reading, to learning the sounds and decoding every word they come across. Reading is fun.
Why not join us as we make learning come to life.
