Have you ever been asked a question at work and felt like you had to answer immediately?

You don't.

When you're caught off guard, a short pause gives you time to understand the question, organise your thoughts and choose your words.

Instead of filling the silence with “umm…”, “I think…” or a rushed response, try:
“That's a good question. Let me think about that for a moment.”

Then pause and gather your thoughts before responding.

Remember, you don't have to be the fastest person to answer. You need to be clear.

A thoughtful pause can make you sound more composed, confident and intentional.

You're Welcome 😄

Confidence vs. Competence Under Pressure

Confidence is believing you can handle the situation.

Competence is actually knowing what to do.

You can be confident and still struggle when you're put on the spot.

You can also be highly competent but suddenly lose your confidence when all eyes are on you.

The goal is to develop both.

For example, knowing your job gives you competence.

But when your manager suddenly asks you to explain your work, you also need the confidence and communication skills to deliver your answer clearly.

Under pressure, confidence helps you step forward.

Competence helps you know what to do.

And the more you practise communicating under pressure, the stronger both become.

We hope you now know the difference and the importance of both?

You're welcome 😄

Have you ever been asked a question at work and you started talking before you had actually figured out what you wanted to say?

Try this simple reset:

a. What is being asked?
Make sure you understand the actual question before you answer.

b. What is my main point?
What is the one thing you want the person to understand?

c. What does the listener need to know?

Give them the information they need not everything you know.

For example, if your manager asks, What’s the update on the project?”

Don't immediately start explaining everything you've done.

Here's a simple answer you can give:

“The project is on track. We've completed the first phase, and we're currently working on implementation. Our next step is to begin testing on Friday.”

The goal isn't to say more. It's to say what matters.

Try these 3 questions the next time you're put on the spot.

You're welcome

It’s another Monday, and you’re probably heading into meetings, catching up with your team, or preparing for a busy week.

Here’s one communication habit you can practise at work this week:

Don’t start speaking before you know your main point.

Whether your boss asks for an update, a colleague asks for your opinion, or you’re called upon to explain something, take a moment to ask yourself:

“What is the one thing I need them to understand?”

Then speak from that point.

For example, instead of giving your manager every detail about a project, start with:

“The project is on track, but we’re currently waiting on the client’s feedback.”

Now your listener immediately knows your main point, and you can provide the supporting details afterwards.

This week, practise leading with your point before giving the explanation.

It will help you sound clearer, more confident, and more intentional in your workplace conversations.

You're welcome

A young employee attended a meeting believing she would only take notes.

Halfway into the meeting, her manager looked at her.

"Can you quickly explain your findings?"
Silence.

Her mind went blank. Everything she had worked on suddenly disappeared.

She wasn't incompetent, she simply wasn't prepared to think and speak under pressure.

That five-minute moment changed how everyone in the room perceived her.

Most professionals don't fail because they lack knowledge.

They fail because they have never trained for unexpected speaking moments.

At D'lor Academy, we help professionals perform when communication suddenly becomes high stakes.

If you've ever frozen when asked to speak unexpectedly, our Impromptu Presentation Mastery course was built for you.

Send a D.m to Register.

You've spent months working on your project.

But on the day of your defence, your grade won't depend only on your research.

It will also depend on how well you present it under pressure.

Many brilliant students lose confidence when they stand before examiners. They forget key points, struggle to answer questions, speak too fast, or become overwhelmed by anxiety.

Your project defence is more than an academic Requirement, it's one of the first high-pressure presentations of your professional life.

- Present your project with confidence and clarity.

- Structure your presentation professionally.

- Answer difficult questions from examiners without panicking.

- Stay calm even when you're under pressure.

- Deliver a presentation that reflects the quality of your research.

Who should attend?

- Final-year undergraduate students

- Students preparing for project or thesis defence

- Students who want to present confidently instead of relying on memorised scripts

Our value is often as good as we can communicate them.

The Difference between professionals who get hired and those who struggle to get their feet at the door is often due to a communication insufficiency.

The real question is, what is your lack of communication costing you?
