The Significant Role of Recommendation Letters in NIW
Embarking on the NIW journey?
Let's delve into a key ingredient for success: Recommendation Letters. These letters aren't just for formalities; they're powerful tools that can significantly increase the chance of your NIW petition. Here's a guide to understanding and harnessing their potential.
1. Establishing Credibility
Recommendation letters play a significant role in establishing your professional credibility. They provide a lens through which immigration officers can view your achievements, skills, and contributions. Choose recommenders who can clearly portray the impact of your work.
2. Personalized Insights
Go beyond generic endorsements. Look for recommenders who can provide personalized insights into your unique contributions.
3. Aligning with National Interest
Ensure that your recommenders understand the broader national interest. Work with them to articulate how your endeavors align with and contribute to the goals and interests of the United States.
4. Showcasing Impact
Recommendation letters are your opportunity to showcase the real-world impact of your work. Encourage recommenders to highlight specific projects, collaborations, or initiatives where your contributions stood out.
5. Crafting a Unified Narrative
Harmonize the narrative across your recommendation letters and petition. Each letter should seamlessly contribute to the overarching story of your significance in the national interest landscape.
6. Diverse Perspectives
Include recommenders from various facets of your professional life. This diversity adds richness to your application, presenting a holistic view of your capabilities and contributions.
7. Timely and Well-Articulated
Request for recommendation letters well in advance, providing recommenders ample time to craft thoughtful and well-articulated endorsements. A rushed letter may not effectively convey your true impact.
8. Addressing Key Criteria
Guide your recommenders to address the key criteria against which your petition will be assessed. From the substantial merit of your endeavor to your capability to advance it, ensure each factor is covered.
9. Expressing Enthusiasm
Encourage recommenders to convey genuine enthusiasm for your work. Passionate endorsements not only resonate with immigration officers but also contribute to a compelling narrative.
10. Gratitude and Communication
Express gratitude to your recommenders for their valuable support. Keep them informed about the progress of your NIW application and share the good news when success is achieved.
Remember, recommendation letters are more than just endorsements; they're your advocates in the NIW process. Choose wisely.

As an international student in the US, one thing you need to learn is the American Academic writing style.
You see, the American writing style is different from the British, French, and German writing style. The earlier you learn and read about this new academic style, the better for you.
Many international students struggle with this new style not because they are not smart but because it is a totally different style from what they were used to.
If you find yourself in this situation, don’t be discouraged. Keep working and you will soon see the fruits of your labor.

HOW TO TRAVEL ABROAD THROUGH CONFERENCES
One of the cheapest and easiest ways to travel abroad is through conferences. What I am about to share with you is applicable to traveling to the US, Canada, UK, Germany and any other country you may think about.
You see, membership of western professional/academic organizations and submissions of abstracts to their conferences can fastrack your travel abroad goal. Not for relocation though but for visiting.
No matter your field of endeavor, there are international organizations you can register for as a historian, an artist, medical
practitioner, scientist etc. You can then leverage your membership to then travel abroad. How do you go about it?
1. Look for organizations that fit your interests and register for them
For example, as a linguist you could register for the North East Modern Language Association in the US( NeMLA) or the German Studies Association (GSA).
2. Submit abstracts to various panels at the conference
Once your abstract is accepted, it becomes easier to make a case at the embassy for your visa approval. Once your paper is accepted, you are different from any other member that is just attending the conference without presenting any paper.
From presenting papers at conferences, you can graduate to becoming a panel chair by proposing a panel. Once your panel is approved, you now become the one who decides who presents at your panel or not.
3. Request for an invitation letter from the conference organizers
4. Apply for your visa early
Once you have a date for your visa interview, begin to gather all the required documents
5. Prepare for your visa interview
Poor preparation prevents outstanding performance. Part of your preparation is to know everything about the organization and the conference so that you don’t ramble at your interview.
6. Prepare for the conference and your trip
Prepare by getting a travel insurance. Prepare your presentation slides very well as this open door could lead to many other open doors.
7. Apply for grants and scholarships
Some organizations often sponsor international participants. Ensure you apply for such opportunities.
8. Network and enjoy the conference
Don’t just present your paper and leave. Attend other panels and network with people.
Once you attend a conferences abroad, you no go be mate with your classmates or colleagues at home again ooo.
PS: I am chairing a panel titled “Postcolonailism and the struggle for identity” at NeMLA 2024 in Boston. You can submit an abstract if you are interested.

Skills I wished I had acquired before relocating abroad
One of the main differences between first world countries and third world countries is the purchasing power of their respective populations. While the purchasing power of third worlders is low, the purchasing power of first worlders is very high and this makes services which are very cheap in Nigeria and other third world countries comparatively expensive in developed nations.
The first skill I wished I had learned is photography. You see, during our 6th wedding anniversary, we wanted to take some family pictures and the service of the professional photographer we wanted to employ was going to cost us $150 for 6 pictures. That is 150K. Abeg how much is one picture for Naija?
The second skill is barbing. Anytime I visit the barber’s shop, I spend between $45-$50. That is 45K to 50K to cut my hair. Abeg how much they dey cut hair for Naija. Some barbers dey collect 500, 1K or 5K at most.
If you learn these skills, you will make a lot of money abroad. This is because the system is designed in such a way that people get paid per hour and they factor that in their billings.
Further, you can never go wrong by learning skills such as: Hair braiding, Gele tying, Make-up, driving, fashion design.
Additionally, you should acquire skills such as coding, website development, app development, funnel building, email marketing, Facebook and YouTube ads, business analysis and data analytics etc…
Instead of wasting your time watching BB Naija, use your data wisely by acquiring these skills through YouTube videos and practicing them until you master them.
You can relocate abroad as a king or as a slave. Make the right choice.
A lizard in Nigeria will never become a crocodile in America.
