Overview:
This two-day (8-hour) training provides social workers and child carers with an evidence-based framework for understanding and applying Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with older children and adolescents. The training begins with a developmentally informed overview of adolescence, focusing on cognitive, emotional, social, and neurological development and its relevance to therapeutic engagement.
Day one lays the theoretical foundation by introducing the principles and empirical basis of CBT, exploring when this modality is appropriate, referral considerations, and how to assess whether an adolescent is suitable for CBT. Emphasis is placed on developmental readiness, contextual factors, and ethical decision-making within social work practice.
Day two focuses on the practical implementation of CBT with adolescents. Participants are guided through core CBT techniques, the therapeutic role of the social worker, and the involvement of parents or caregivers. Practical tools, case examples, and structured exercises support skill development and clinical application. The training is grounded in peer-reviewed research and established CBT literature and is designed to enhance ethical, developmentally responsive, and effective social work practice.
