Breaking: "Mission accomplished" Russia Special Forces (Wagner group) exits Mali.

Russia’s Wagner mercenary group says it is leaving Mali, declaring its mission to support the country’s military against jihadist insurgents “accomplished.” In a statement, Wagner claimed it had stabilized the country, destroyed terrorist infrastructure, and trained local forces.

The group began operating in Mali in 2021, shortly after French forces withdrew. Its presence was welcomed by the ruling junta but drew international criticism over alleged human rights abuses, including the 2022 Moura massacre — claims both Wagner and Mali’s government deny.

Wagner’s departure comes amid broader restructuring under Russia’s Ministry of Defense following the death of founder Yevgeny Prigozhin. While the group calls the exit voluntary, analysts say shifting geopolitics may be behind the move.

Mali’s government has yet to comment, and concerns remain over how the withdrawal will affect the country’s fight against extremism. Wagner’s exit leaves questions about Russia’s future role in the Sahel region.

I REGRET MY DECISION OF DIVORCING MY EX-HUSBAND, I NEVER WISHED ANY OF MY SONS OR DAUGHTERS THAT - ACTRESS NGOZI EZEONU

I'm divorced. But I don't ever want any of my children to be divorced. Divorce is something I never wished for or ever planned. It happened to me, and it was one of the most painful experiences of my life. That’s why I always tell my children, before you say I do, be sure you understand what marriage is really about.

When my son told me, Mommy, I found a wife. She's from another country and I met her online, I told him, 'You can meet a wife anywhere, you can marry from other countries, but pray about it and be certain she's the one. Don't rush into marriage and rush out. If you know she's the one, let's go and bring her home.

I’ve been through it, and I know how hard it is. So as a mother, I’ll keep guiding them and praying they get it right, because I want them to enjoy the peace I never had in marriage.

Ghanaian citizens no longer need traditional visas to travel to Morocco, following a new agreement between the two countries.

The announcement was made by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who said the new policy takes immediate effect. Instead of applying through the embassy, travelers can now obtain an online travel authorisation within 24 hours.

“This is one of the key agreements reached with the Moroccan Foreign Minister during my two-day working visit,” Ablakwa said in a statement.

Breaking: Gabon withdraws from EU fishing agreement due to imbalance profit, lack of employment and investment.

Eighteen years after signing a key fisheries partnership with the European Union, Gabon has announced its intention to unilaterally withdraw from the agreement, citing an imbalance in benefits and growing concerns over resource exploitation.

The agreement, established in 2007, allowed European vessels to fish in Gabonese waters in exchange for financial support to Gabon’s fisheries sector. However, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has described the deal as "lopsided," arguing that while European fleets have profited significantly, Gabon has seen limited returns.

Libreville is now raising the alarm over the potential overexploitation of its marine resources and the lack of investment and job creation resulting from the partnership. A major sticking point is that fish caught under the agreement are shipped directly to Europe without being landed or processed in Gabon—a practice the government now wants to end.

In its official statement, the Gabonese government emphasized the need for local economic benefits and has expressed a desire to develop domestic fish processing capabilities.

The European Union has responded with surprise but acknowledged Gabon's sovereign right to withdraw. Brussels also signaled it remains open to negotiations.

The move marks a significant shift in Gabon's approach to managing its natural resources, with a renewed focus on national control and economic self-sufficiency.

Niger Orders Red Cross To Leave.

The International Committee of the Red Cross announced the closure of its offices in Niger and the departure of its foreign staff, four months after the ruling junta ordered the organization to leave the country.

The ICRC confirmed the closure and departure in a statement on Thursday.

“We reiterate our willingness to maintain constructive dialogue with the authorities of Niger with a view to resuming our strictly humanitarian protection and assistance activities," Patrick Youssef, the ICRC’s regional director for Africa, said in the statement.

In February, Niger’s Foreign Affairs Ministry had ordered the ICRC to close its offices and leave the country. No official reason was given for the military junta’s decision to shut down the organization's operations in the country at the time.

The ICRC said it had been in dialogue with Niger's authorities since February to understand the reasons for their decision and provide any necessary clarification but that these efforts were unsuccessful.

On May 31, Niger’s junta leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, justified the ICRC expulsion on Nigerien state television, accusing the organization of having met with “terrorist leaders” and funding armed groups.

The ICRC refuted the accusations in its statement on Thursday, saying that dialogue with all sides in the conflict is necessary to carry out its humanitarian mandate and that it “never provides financial, logistical, or any other form of support" to armed groups.

The humanitarian organization had been active in the West African country since 1990, mainly helping people displaced by violence by Islamic extremists, food insecurity and natural disasters. According to the organization, it provided humanitarian aid to more than 2 million people in Niger.

Niger’s military rulers took power in a coup two years ago, the latest of several military takeovers in Africa’s Sahel, the vast, arid expanse south of the Sahara Desert that has become a hotspot for extremist violence by militant groups.

Since the coup, Niger has pulled away from its Western partners, such as France and the United States, turning instead to Russia for security.

Last November, the country's military junta banned the French aid group Acted from working in the country amid tensions with France.

Just in: Mali Suspends Gold mining During Rainey Season To Protect Workers From Landslide.

Mali has suspended artisanal gold mining activities from June to September, to protect workers from landslides during the rainy season, the Malian mines ministry said on Tuesday.

The ministry said meteorological services have forecast heavy rains from 15 June 15 to 30 September 2025.

A spokesperson for the ministry told Reuters that safety reasons motivated the decision.

The Malian government suspended the granting of new artisanal mining permits to foreigners in March, after two accidents killed dozens of people, mostly women.

More than 70 people had died in January 2024, when a tunnel collapsed in an unregulated gold mine.

Deadly accidents are frequent as artisanal miners often use old-fashion and unregulated methods of digging. Illegal mining also increases safety risks.

Artisanal mining in West Africa has increased in recent years due to growing demand and rising prices.

The Malian government is trying to regain control over the country's gold resources, and is currently involved in a legal battle against Canadian gold giant Barrick.

Mali’s 2024 gold production was estimated at around 51 metric tons, a 23% drop from the year before.

The country remains one of Africa’s main gold producers.

Confederation of Sahel States Moves to Establish Joint Judicial Body.

The Confederation of Sahel States (CSS), comprising Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, has announced plans to establish a joint judicial body aimed at enhancing legal cooperation and addressing transnational challenges within the region.

The decision was made during the inaugural conference of CSS justice ministers held in Bamako on May 29 and 30, 2025. The meeting focused on creating a common legal framework to tackle issues such as insecurity, arms proliferation, and money laundering, while strengthening the convergence of judicial systems among member states.

The proposed judicial body will have several key objectives, including harmonising national laws, enhancing the fight against transnational crime, and reducing reliance on existing regional legal frameworks.

This initiative is part of the CSS’s broader efforts to strengthen institutional integration.

In May 2025, the confederation announced the creation of its investment bank, the Banque Confédérale d’Investissement et de Développement (BCID-AES), with an initial capital of 500 billion CFA francs (approximately $762 million). The bank aims to finance development projects in agriculture, energy, education, and industrialisation, reducing dependence on external funding sources.

The CSS was officially established in July 2024, following the withdrawal of its member states from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The confederation seeks to promote regional stability, economic independence, and self-reliance in the face of security threats and political pressures.

The establishment of a joint judicial body represents a significant step toward legal empowerment for the CSS and may serve as a model for other regional integration initiatives in Africa.
