How We Help our Pupils Ace Compositions!
Many pupils struggle, not because they cannot think, but because they do not know how to write. Here is a practical approach that works in the classroom:
1️⃣ Start with Oral Composition
Before writing, ask questions aloud:
"Where did you go? Who was with you? What did you do?"
If they can say it clearly, they can write it clearly.
2️⃣ Teach a Simple Formula
Use a clear structure: Beginning, Middle, Ending
Beginning: Introduce the topic (My last holiday was fun.)
Middle: Give details (I went to the market with my mother. I played football with my friends.)
Ending: Conclude (I enjoyed my holiday very much.)
3️⃣ Use Guided Writing
Start with fill-in-the-blank exercises, then sentence completion, and finally full composition. This builds confidence and removes fear.
4️⃣ Build a Sentence Bank
Create a list of reusable sentences for pupils:
I stayed at ________.
I went to ________ with my ________.
I enjoyed my holiday very much.
This helps them write confidently without struggling for words.
5️⃣ Focus on Neatness and Basics
Teach:
Capital letters at the beginning
Full stops at the end
Proper spacing
One idea per line
6️⃣ Encourage, Do Not Over-Correct
Underline one or two mistakes, praise the effort, and model the correct version. Confidence improves writing faster than constant correction.
7️⃣ Rewrite Corrected Work
Show the corrected version on the board and let pupils rewrite neatly. Writing improves through repetition and correction.
8️⃣ Practice Weekly
Short compositions every week on familiar topics: My Family, My School, My Teacher, My Favourite Food. Consistency beats rare, long exercises.
9️⃣ Use Pictures and Real Experiences
Pupils write best about what they see and know. Show pictures of the market, school, or home and let them write about it.
🔟 Celebrate Progress
Read good compositions aloud, display neat work, and reward effort. Pupils need to know: “Writing is something I can do!”
✅ Bottom line: Talk first, guide first, structure always, and encourage constantly. Composition success is achievable for every pupil!
