Just a day after resumption and I already know almost all the names of the students and teachers in her class 😁. I doubt 🤔 if this girl learnt anything yesterday other than observing all the students and teachers in her new class.

MY EXPERIENCE

In the year 2000, I was given the opportunity to work as a full time class teacher, even though I wasn't qualified, nor was I a trained teacher then. I had no choice than to pick up the job, I was faced with lots of relentless challenges of educating a diverse group of students. I struggled a lot balancing lesson plans, grading and addressing individual needs and in reality, it was overwhelming. I almost quit the job and I wrote a letter of resignation and handed it to the Head Teacher and told her that she should place me as a caregiver (minder) else I was going to resign, lo and behold, she read my letter of resignation and after reading it, she signed on it and stated that my resignation was unacceptable. She looked into my eyes and told me that even though I had no training experience as a full time class teacher that I was very intelligent, talented and passionate about the job, and it would be a waste of talent, skills for me to work as a caregiver.
She assured me that I was going to learn the needed skills to be a classroom teacher and promised to train and guide me beginning with the basic skills needed for me to be efficient and effectively handle a class.
After the short and powerful counselling, she sent me back to the classroom, and that was how I started my teaching career, this, with renewed zeal, more passionate, and with a burning fire not to let her down after all the efforts she is putting on me. I was an early years educator from the year 2000 to the year 2011. Teaching in early years actually did shape my life, and changed my perspective of things and people around me. Dealing with those ‘tender lilies’ can be stressful, and at the same time stress relieving, depending on how you look at it and from where you're looking at it.

One bright sunny day, I had a particularly challenging class and I felt like running mad then I found solace in the staff lounge where I decided to share my pains and frustrations with other teachers, I was amazed how these teachers were very supportive and some even shared their own experiences and struggles. So one of the teachers suggested that we should collaborate and work together as a team, the idea was fantastic, so we decided that we would meet on a weekly basis to share resources, ideas and insights on effective teaching strategies. These weekly meetings really helped me overcome the struggles and stress I was experiencing then. I noticed that these community of great teachers really boosted my self confidence and they made my job easier and better. I have always been interested in self-care so I started incorporating mindfulness exercises into my routine. Simple techniques, like deep breathing and short breaks helped me stay focused and managed stress. I also encouraged other colleagues to do the same, promoting a healthier work-life balance.

To address the diverse needs of my pupils, I decided to implement a differentiated teaching method. I opted for personalised learning experiences. Collaborating with parents became one of my major approaches, fostering a strong homeschool connection that positively impacted learners' performance.

Even though I was learning from our weekly meetings, I was still experiencing some challenges and then we all advocated for professional opportunities. Exposing ourselves to workshops, seminars and training sessions equipped me with new skills and perspectives. As years went by, the trainee teacher had mastered so many skills and teaching strategies that I could even train other staff members both within and outside my school then.

Overtime, my colleagues and I transformed how teaching was approached, introduced diverse learning and teaching materials and were skilled even at improvising materials, every part of the school felt our presence, including our school environment. Our school became a hub of Innovation, resilience and continuous improvement. Through shared experiences, mindfulness, practices, personalised teaching, community collaboration and ongoing professional development, my colleagues and I turned our initial stress and challenges into a supportive educational community.

My learning attitude didn't stop as a class teacher, Over the years, I have continued to share my experiences and my practical skills to teachers, school owners and administrators, heads of schools, etc. I am determined to reach out to more and more teachers from various schools in various states. To this end, I'll be dedicating 4 hours of my time every Monday from 9;30am every Morning and 4-6pm, every evening to share my experiences, struggles, and tips that I learned in my journey to becoming an outstanding teacher.
