What is QFF? – Decoding Altimeter Pressure Settings
Did You Know?

QFF is often used on weather maps to draw isobars — lines of equal pressure — which help meteorologists identify high and low pressure systems, storms, and frontal zones. It's a key part of understanding large-scale weather movement.

What is it?
QFF is a pressure setting used in aviation and meteorology that represents the atmospheric pressure at sea level, adjusted for local weather conditions and actual temperature profiles over time. It provides a more accurate measurement of sea-level pressure than the standard QNH in certain contexts, especially for surface weather analysis and forecasting.

Unlike QNH, which assumes a standard temperature lapse rate, QFF is calculated using actual atmospheric conditions over a specific location. This means it offers a true sea-level pressure based on real, not idealized, temperature and humidity data — making it more useful for weather stations and synoptic charts rather than pilots.

Based on observed conditions, not a fixed lapse rate
Used primarily in meteorological observations, not standard aviation altimeter settings

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS FOR 4TH/ENGINEER and 3RD/ENGINEER.

First of all let's look at who is a fourth Engineer?

A Fourth Engineer, also known as a Third Assistant Engineer, is a junior-level engineer on a merchant vessel, primarily responsible for assisting the Chief Engineer and other engineers in maintaining and operating the ship's machinery and systems. They perform watchkeeping duties, maintain the boilers, and perform other duties assigned by the Second Engineer.

■ Here are some interview questions specifically related to the machinery for which a 4th Engineer is responsible:

1. Auxiliary Engines and Generators

What is your role in the operation and maintenance of auxiliary engines and generators?

How do you carry out routine checks on auxiliary engines, and what parameters do you monitor closely?

What steps would you take if the auxiliary engine shows signs of overheating or abnormal noise?

2. Air Compressors

How do you maintain the air compressor, and what are the common issues you encounter?

Can you explain the safety procedures you follow while working on air compressors?

What are the potential causes of low air pressure in the starting air system?

3. Boilers and Steam Systems

How do you ensure the safe operation of the ship's boiler?

What is your role in blowdown operations and maintaining boiler water chemistry?

How would you troubleshoot a situation where the boiler fails to ignite?

4. Pumps and Valves

These questions focus on the machinery and systems that a 4th Engineer is responsible for maintaining, with an emphasis on practical knowledge, problem-solving, and safety awareness.

Here are some possible interview sample answers for a 4th Engineer of a ship regarding the machinery they are responsible for:

1. What is your role in the maintenance of auxiliary engines?

Sample Answer: "My primary responsibility is to ensure the smooth operation and regular maintenance of the auxiliary engines. This includes daily checks on fuel, lubricating oil levels, and cooling systems, as well as monitoring exhaust temperatures and engine performance. I conduct routine inspections for wear and tear, oil analysis, and keep an eye on vibration levels. Additionally, I carry out preventive maintenance like changing filters and topping up fluids as per the planned maintenance schedule."

2. How do you maintain the air compressors, and what issues can arise?

Sample Answer: "I perform daily checks on the air compressor to ensure that pressure levels are within the recommended range. Routine maintenance involves checking for air leaks, monitoring oil levels, and cleaning air filters. Common issues include high discharge temperature, which could indicate a dirty or clogged air filter, or worn piston rings that reduce compression efficiency. If any abnormal sounds or excessive vibrations are observed, I would immediately investigate for potential bearing or alignment issues."

3. What steps do you follow to maintain the ship’s boiler?

Sample Answer: "The safe operation of the boiler is crucial. I monitor water levels, steam pressure, and temperature regularly. I also perform blowdowns to remove sludge and maintain water quality by checking the chemical dosing. Routine inspections of the burner and safety valves are important to avoid dangerous situations. If the boiler doesn’t ignite, I would first check the fuel supply, ignition system, and air intake. Any anomalies are reported immediately to senior engineers."

4. What would you do if the bilge pump is not discharging properly?

Sample Answer: "If the bilge pump isn't discharging properly, I would first check if the pump is receiving power and if the suction filter is clogged. Next, I would inspect the pump for any airlocks or mechanical issues, like a damaged impeller or worn-out seals. If necessary, I would clean the bilge lines and replace any faulty components. In case of persistent issues, I would alert the Chief Engineer and follow the ship’s standard procedures for repairs."

5. What is your role during fuel oil bunkering operations?

Sample Answer: "During bunkering, my role is to monitor the process carefully to prevent any spills or contamination. I ensure that all valves and pipelines are correctly aligned, monitor the fuel transfer rate, and check the tanks for water or sediment before filling. I also take regular soundings to track fuel levels and report any anomalies. In addition, I maintain communication with the deck and chief engineer to ensure that everything runs smoothly and according to safety regulations."

6. How do you ensure the proper operation of the sewage treatment plant?

Sample Answer: "My responsibility is to ensure that the sewage treatment plant is functioning efficiently and in compliance with MARPOL regulations. I monitor the biological and chemical processes involved in treating wastewater, perform routine maintenance on pumps and filters, and ensure that the effluent meets discharge standards. If the system becomes clogged or malfunctions, I would clean the filters, inspect the pumps, and check for any electrical or mechanical faults that need attention."

7. What would you do if you noticed high temperatures in the engine cooling system?

Sample Answer: "If the cooling system temperature rises, the first step is to reduce the engine load and check the cooling water levels. I would then inspect for any blockages in the sea water intake or heat exchanger and ensure that the cooling pumps are working correctly. If the problem persists, I would examine the thermostat for malfunctions and the condition of the impellers in the pumps. Depending on the findings, I’d either correct the issue or escalate it to the Chief Engineer."

8. How do you perform maintenance on the fuel oil purifier?

Sample Answer: "Maintenance on the fuel oil purifier involves cleaning the disc stack, checking the seals, and ensuring that the bowl is properly balanced. I also monitor the differential pressure across the filter and adjust the feed rate if necessary. During every inspection, I ensure that the drive belts are in good condition, the oil discharge is clean, and that no water is mixing with the fuel. Preventive maintenance helps avoid contamination and maintains the fuel’s efficiency."

9. What is your role in maintaining the steering gear system?

Sample Answer: "My role includes regularly checking the hydraulic oil levels and inspecting the condition of the rams, pumps, and valves in the steering gear. I perform tests for hydraulic pressure, ensure the system is free from airlocks, and check for any oil leaks. During emergency steering drills, I assist in operating the manual steering controls and ensure that the backup systems are ready in case of failure."

10. How do you handle routine checks for the freshwater generator?

Sample Answer: "I perform regular checks on the freshwater generator by monitoring the evaporator vacuum, temperature, and feed water flow. I also inspect for scaling or fouling inside the heat exchanger, clean the condenser, and ensure that the ejector pumps are functioning efficiently. Routine chemical dosing is necessary to prevent scaling and maintain efficiency. If the freshwater output drops, I would inspect for blockages or mechanical issues."

Basic Things To Know ✅⚓️
