ACADEMIC EXCURSION TO CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA (CBN), OWERRI BRANCH BY STUDENTS OF PRIME BRITISH INT’L COLLEGE, OWERRI.

On thursday, 25th September, 2025, the students of Prime British International College, Owerri embarked on an academic excursion to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Owerri Branch. The purpose of the visit was to expose the students to the inner workings of Nigeria’s apex financial institution and deepen their understanding of the country’s monetary and financial system.
During the excursion, the students were warmly received and taken through different units of the bank where officials explained their functions in detail:
1. Banking Hall, comprising the Cash Unit, Customer Support Unit, and Clearing Unit, where they learned about the management of cash transactions, customer relations, and cheque clearing processes.
2. Currency Control Unit, made up of the Currency Processing and Disposal Unit (CPDU), Currency Management Centre, and the Treasury Unit, which handles the issuance, sorting, and safe disposal of naira notes as well as currency distribution.
3. Research and Statistics Office, where students were introduced to data analysis and policy formulation support functions.
4. Branch Support Unit, comprising the Payment Unit, Record Unit, and Inventory Unit, responsible for internal support services that aid smooth operations of the branch.
5. Development Finance Office (DFO), which provides loans through deposit money institutions with emphasis on diversifying the economy, especially in the agricultural sector.
The students asked insightful questions, engaged actively with the officials, and gained first-hand knowledge of the CBN’s pivotal role in monetary policy, currency stability, and economic development.
Conclusively, the excursion was highly enriching and impactful. The students left the CBN Owerri Branch better informed, academically fulfilled, and more inspired about the crucial role the Central Bank plays in sustaining Nigeria’s economy.
