Amaka’s Story (IMSU)

Amaka is a student of Imo State University (IMSU).

Some nights, hunger kept her awake.
Not because she didn’t want to eat—but because there was no food, no money, and no one to talk to.

She remembered how she bought her JAMB form with her last savings, believing things would somehow work out. Her family managed to pay her school fees and hostel fees, and from that point on, Amaka was on her own.

Every day came with silent pressure.
Her family depended on her future, yet her present was heavy.
She would open her book to read… and end up staring at one page all night.
Her mind was tired. Her heart was bothered. Depression slowly crept in.

Then one day, Amaka heard something that changed her thinking:

*“The university is a miniature world. If you can survive on campus, you can survive anywhere.”*

She began to look around IMSU differently.

Over 30,000 students.
A huge market.
A living economy.

She did the math:
- If she sold just one product to 100 students every month,
- and made ₦500 profit per sale,
- that’s ₦50,000 monthly.

But the questions came fast:

- What product should I sell?

- Where will I get money to start?

- I’m shy—how do I convince people to buy?

- How do I reach students online?

That was when Amaka found DMI Talent Support.

Recently, I walked into a group of students discussing the ESUT girls’ noodles that went viral. I listened for a while, then asked a simple question: Were you aware of the just-concluded Heirs Insurance Hackathon 2026?

It was a national competition that required three students from each university to create some solutions using AI, with real money on the line.

While some students were busy discussing trends, others were preparing for opportunities.
That difference showed in the results.

Students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, competing as Team Omnivoice, emerged overall winners and walked away with ₦5 million.
Team Alafia from Ahmadu Bello University secured the 1st runner-up position and won ₦3 million, while Team Von Mises from Lagos State University finished as 2nd runner-up with ₦1 million.

Same country. Same students.
Different conversations. Different communities.

Why Are IMSU Students Paying So Much for Private Lodges?

They asked me to pay ₦100,000 as agent fee for a lodge of ₦250,000. Why?

Finding student accommodation around IMSU has become a nightmare.
Orji, Works Layout, Bishop’s Court, Okwu Uratta, Aladinma, Ikenegbu, and Okigwe Road—everywhere tells the same story.

Agents will collect inspection fees even when they have no lodge to show you. After that, you’re expected to pay an agent fee that is almost equal to the actual rent. Then come the rent and agreement fees on top of it all.

This is a serious problem.

As Imo Stars, it’s time we create a solution.

So why the ₦100,000 agent fee on a ₦250,000 lodge?
Because five agents were “involved,” and each of them wanted ₦20,000.

For doing what exactly?

Connecting someone who connected another person, who connected another, before finally reaching the actual caretaker.

For real?
In an age of technology?

Imagine this instead:
A database of verified, direct caretakers for all student lodges.
A system where a student packing out—or a caretaker—signals when a space becomes available.
Students then contact caretakers directly.

At most, the student who posts the vacancy acts as the only agent and earns a fair 5–10% fee. That means the maximum agent fee on a ₦250,000 lodge is ₦25,000, not ₦100,000.

That is far better than paying ₦100,000 to five people who refuse to engage in something more productive.

This is part of the DMI Talent Support IMSU Initiative.
Through this program, students can earn legitimate income simply by posting verified vacancies around them.
