🎓 The Debt You Can’t Escape

“A painful lesson to some parents”
Story by Joan O.

---

[Soft music begins – calm and reflective tone]

Amaka was known for her sharpness — or so she thought.
Every school term, just before the deadline for paying fees, she would withdraw her son, Chidi, and move him to a new school.

To her, it was strategy.
She always said, “Why pay when a new school will take him without asking too many questions?”
It was her little trick to “save money.”
To the schools she left behind, it was nothing but debt and deceit.

---

🌤️ A New Beginning

[Voice softens – tone of calm deception]
At first, everything seemed fine.
Chidi was bright, polite, and intelligent — teachers loved him everywhere he went.

But with every transfer, something inside him changed.
He began to ask his mother questions she brushed aside.

> “Mummy, why do we keep changing schools?”
“Because you deserve the best,” she’d reply quickly, smiling to hide her guilt.

Deep down, she knew the truth — it wasn’t about the best.
It was about escaping what she owed.

---

🎓 Graduation Day

[Music shifts to joyful rhythm, then slowly fades]
Years passed. Chidi grew into a fine young man, ready to graduate from secondary school.

On that morning, the sun shone bright. The air was filled with joy, laughter, and music.
Parents clapped proudly. Cameras flashed.

Amaka sat among them, smiling.
She felt victorious — she had outsmarted the system.

But as Chidi walked onto the stage to collect his certificate, the air grew strangely heavy.
The music faded… replaced by whispers.

> “Pay me…”
“Pay for the learning…”
“Pay what you owe…”

---

đź‘» The Haunting

[Background shifts to eerie echoes, low hum of voices]
The voices were soft at first, then louder.
Amaka looked around — no one else seemed to hear them.

Suddenly, Chidi froze. His smile vanished.
He dropped his certificate and clutched his head.

> “I’m not owing! I’m not owing!” he screamed.

The crowd gasped.
Amaka ran to him, but the whispers only grew stronger — a chorus now:

> “You are owing us… You did not pay your school fees… Pay me! Pay me!”

Chidi fell to the ground, trembling.
Parents pulled their children closer.
Teachers watched in horror.

Amaka wept, holding him tightly.

---

đź’” The Lesson

[Music slows – somber piano returns]
In that moment, she understood.
The debts she thought she had escaped had come back — not as bills, but as torment.

The voices she heard were not of men, but of conscience.
The price of deceit was being paid through her son’s pain.

Days later, when calm returned, she went back to every school she had cheated.
She apologized. She paid what she could, sometimes double.
Not to clear her record — but to clear her spirit.

And though Chidi never fully returned to the boy he once was,
his mother learned a truth she would never forget:

> “You can cheat a man, but you can’t cheat education.
What you owe will always find you.”

---

✨ Moral

Pay for the learning. Teach honesty by example.
Because the lessons we teach our children in silence
speak louder than any classroom ever could.
