*DMGS AND THE SPIRIT OF BROTHERHOOD*

There is a rare, almost sacred bond that ties every Old Boy of Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha. It is the kind of connection that transcends time, geography, and generation. A brotherhood so enduring that it often feels stronger than blood.

Anyone who has passed through the hallowed halls of DMGS knows what it means to be a Dengramite, a proud bearer of the school’s everlasting motto, Lux Fiat (Show the light).

That light doesn’t only shine in our memories; it glows wherever we go.

It happened just last Thursday. I was part of a delegation accompanying the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, on a courtesy visit to the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence Archbishop Daniel Okoh, who is an old boy of DMGS, at his office in Abuja.

When Archbishop Daniel Okoh was welcoming members of the delegation one after another. By the time he got to my turn, I greeted His Eminence with two simple words that every Dengramite knows by heart, “Lux Fiat.”

Those words changed the tone of the room.

The Archbishop’s expression lit up immediately. He paused, broke into a wide smile, and greeted me specially. Not with the formality of a dignitary, but with the warmth of a brother reunited after years apart.

He proudly told the delegation that he could not resist acknowledging a fellow Old Boy, even if him (Archbishop Okoh) had graduated twenty years before me. The shared heritage of DMGS commanded that kind of recognition.

Throughout the visit, His Eminence continued to make references to our shared background. He recognized me specially again at the start of his remarks, and again as he closed. Each mention drew curious glances from the attendees. The question on their faces was obvious: What kind of school inspires such devotion among its alumni?

With a smile of pride, I quoted the words of the late Venerable Thomas Mbanugo, my principal during my DMGS days:

“There are two secondary schools in Nigeria; DMGS and others.”

That was not arrogance, it was tradition. To attend DMGS is to belong to a lineage of excellence. It is, in many ways, like wearing the jersey of Real Madrid, the best club in the world.

DMGS has produced generations of principled, accomplished men who continue to illuminate every sector of national life, education, business, politics, faith, and public service. His Eminence Archbishop Okoh is one of those shining examples, a worthy ambassador of our noble alma mater who leads CAN with the same grace and integrity that DMGS instilled in him.

During our visit, he went beyond nostalgia. He assured the NPC delegation of CAN’s commitment to collaborate in mobilizing and raising public awareness for the ongoing Civil Registration and Vital Statistics program, as well as the forthcoming Population and Housing Census.

Even in official matters, the Dengram spirit of leadership and service radiated clearly.

Each time I encounter a fellow Old Boy, whether across a boardroom table or in church pews, I am reminded that DMGS is not just a school, it is a lifelong fraternity. A brotherhood of light-bearers.

Every Dengramite is taught to “show the light of excellence wherever we go.” And from Onitsha to Abuja, Nigeria to the world, that light continues to shine brightly.

Lux Fiat to all Dengramites. May we keep the flame alive.

Today, we celebrate Prof. F. O. C. Nwonwu, of Tugwell House, DMGS Class of 1962, who served meritoriously as Laundry Supervisor (Prefect), as he marks his Golden Jubilee Wedding Anniversary.

He was wedded on 21st February 1976 at the Chapel of the Resurrection, University of Ibadan, a union that has stood strong for fifty remarkable years.

Among his distinguished classmates are Sir Prof. Ilochi Okafor SAN and Rt. Rev. Prof. Iheagwam, men who, like him, embody the enduring spirit of DMGS.

In our discussion earlier today, he warmly recounted his days as Laundry Prefect (then known as Laundry Supervisor). With nostalgia, he narrated how Dengramites would submit their pairs of uniforms through him for onward delivery to the laundry workers, who would carefully wash, press, and return them neatly. It was a role of trust, responsibility, and service (a reflection of the discipline and structure that defined life at DMGS)

He also recalled a DOBA Worldwide Convention where Rt. Rev. Prof. Iheagwam served as Guest Speaker. In his address, he challenged Dengramites to venture into politics and aspire to become governors and even presidents, just as those of our sister school, Christ the King College, have done.

However, Sir Prof. Ilochi Okafor, SAN, swiftly rose to respond, affirming that the training given at DMGS does not permit the kind of politics often practised in Nigeria. He emphasized that DMGS forms her students to be good boys, great men, loving husbands, caring fathers, and above all, responsible citizens.

As we celebrate this Golden Jubilee with Prof., we honour not just a marriage of fifty years, but a life that reflects the very ideals of Dennis Memorial Grammar School.

Here's to many more years 🥂

ASH WEDNESDAY

Dear Dengramites,

As we mark this sacred season of Lent with Ash Wednesday, I warmly extend my heartfelt greetings to every member of DOBA Worldwide.

This solemn day reminds us of our human frailty, the need for repentance, and the call to spiritual renewal. It invites us to reflect deeply, seek God’s mercy, and recommit ourselves to lives of humility, love, sacrifice, and service to one another.

May this Lenten journey strengthen our faith, purify our hearts, and renew our commitment to unity, peace, and progress within our great association. Let us use this season to forgive, to love more sincerely, and to walk in righteousness.

I pray that God grants us the grace to remain steadfast, hopeful, and purposeful throughout this period and beyond.

Wishing you all a spiritually fulfilling Lenten season.

God bless DOBA Worldwide.
