Have you ever taught a class where students seemed uninterested, nonchalant, noisy and difficult to control?
Sometimes the problem is not with the students but classroom management mistakes teachers make unknowingly.
Today, I will share 5 classroom management mistakes teachers must avoid and steps to take instead.
1. Starting a lesson without settling the class: Many teachers begin teaching without getting the attention of the students, students are still talking and you start teaching, stop, this leads confusion and loss of attention. Wait until you have everyone’s attention before starting a lesson.
2. Inconsistent rules: students become confused when rules change from day to day. Establish clear rules and apply them consistently, if talking during class is not allowed today, it should not be allowed tomorrow.
3. Overusing punishment: Excessive punishment can create resentment and fear. While discipline is important, always recognize and reward good behaviour too.
4. Ignoring student relationships: A teacher who knows students personally often experiences fewer discipline problems. Build positive relationships with your students.
5. Poor lesson plan: Students become restless when lessons are poorly organised. Plan your lessons carefully and thoroughly and use engaging teaching methods.
Classroom management is not about controlling students through fear, it’s about creating an atmosphere where learning can thrive.
