Interesting read. What are your thoughts ðŸ’
They only learned to walk because you stopped carrying them...
In Umuoka, Eze was known for his loud laughter and even louder mistakes. He planted late, traded poorly, and whenever the consequences arrived, he turned to his childhood friend, Okoro.
Okoro had quiet hands and deep barns. For years, he was the bridge Eze walked upon. When Eze’s harvest failed, Okoro gave him fresh seed. When his roof leaked, he ran back to Okoro. Okoro did all of this without once counting the cost.
One evening, Eze visited Okoro with news: the community had decided to honor him with a chieftaincy title, and he had gladly accepted. The only challenge was that he didn't have the number of yams demanded by tradition, and he knew Okoro had more than enough.
For the first time, Okoro looked at him and refused. He told Eze he had no tubers to give to a man who accepted an honor he could not afford. Eze begged for a loan, but Okoro did not open his barn.
At first, Eze laughed it off. By evening, his voice had sharpened. By nightfall, the narrative had changed: Okoro was envious of Eze because he hadn't been chosen for the title.
The village listened.
Eze pushed forward anyway. He tried to borrow elsewhere, but the truth mocked him. No one, not even his own brothers, would lend him a single tuber.
On the day of the ceremony, his offerings fell short. Murmurs rose through the crowd. Among the people, Okoro stood still, watching. Eze locked eyes with him and, for a moment, he understood.
He didn't change overnight, but he finally felt the weight of his own life.
The title was delayed. Fueled by a bitter pride, Eze decided to work. He never returned to Okoro’s gate. He didn't become the wealthiest man in Umuoka, but he restored his dignity.
As long as you are always the solution, they will never see their own laziness as the problem.
