Tell your friends about it....

16/10/2016

POEM:- "YOURSELF TO BLAME"

If things go bad for you-
And make you a bit ashamed,
Often you will find out that
You have yourself to blame...

Swiftly we ran to mischief
And then the bad luck came.
Why do we fault others?
We have ourselves to blame...

Whatever happens to us,
Here are the words we say,
"Had it not been for so-and-so
Things wouldn't have gone that way."

And if you are short of friends,
I'll tell you what to do_
Make an examination,
You'll find the fault's in you...

You're the captain of your ship,
So agree with the same_
If you travel downward,
You have yourself to blame.

What Is Transgender?

The initials in LGBT refer to the global community of le***an, gay, bis*xual and transgender individuals. While most people know what those first three terms mean, the word "transgender" is not as widely understood.

The term describes people whose gender identity differs from the s*x to which they were assigned at birth, according to GLAAD, an LGBT media-advocacy organization.

S*x vs. gender

S*x and gender are two different concepts. A person's s*x refers to his or her biological status as either male or female. The determination of a person's s*x primarily depends on various physical characteristics, including chromosomes, reproductive anatomy and s*x hormones, according to the American Psychological Association (APA).

Gender, on the other hand, is a societal construct that deals with the expected behaviors, roles and activities typically associated with the different s*xes, the APA said. Gender roles, which differ in different cultures, influence how people act and feel about themselves. Gender identity is how individuals see themselves. It is their sense of being male, female or something else. Their gender identities may or may not align with their s*x or the gender roles expected of them by society.

S*xual orientation is different from gender identity. S*xual orientation is a person's physical, emotional or romantic attraction to another person, while gender identity is about one's own sense of self. Transgender people may be straight, le***an, gay or bis*xual. For example, a person born with male ge***alia may transition to being female, but may be attracted to females. In this case, the person may identify as le***an, even though she was born as a male.

Under the transgender umbrella

Transgender people may use more-specific categories to describe themselves, including transs*xual, genderqueer and cross-dresser, according to the APA.

Genderqueer individuals don't identify with either male or female descriptions, and instead feel that their gender falls somewhere along a continuum.

People who cross-dress wear clothing that's traditionally worn by people of a different gender. Cross-dressers are generally comfortable with their birth s*x, and this type of gender expression isn't necessarily related to s*xual desire or erotic activity, GLAAD said. (GLAAD also noted that the term "transvestite" is considered derogatory.)

Making the transition

Trying to change a person's gender identity is no more successful than trying to change a person's s*xual orientation, GLAAD said. Some people who are transs*xual may take steps to better align their s*x with their gender using hormones and surgery.

"So-called 'gender reassignment surgery' (more commonly called 'gender affirmation surgery' by both medical professionals and transgender individuals) usually references transgender ge***al surgery," said Dr. Joshua Safer, medical director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Boston Medical Center (BMC), who is also in the department of endocrinology at BMC. "There are also chest-reconstruction surgeries and facial feminization surgeries, among other options."

Ge***al surgery is typically reserved for transgender individuals over the age of 18 who have been treated with hormones, if that is what is medically indicated, and who have lived for at least a year in the gender roles that match their gender identities, explained Safer. Candidates for surgery are reviewed by a medical team that considers mental health and physical health in determining the best treatment strategy, including potentially surgery, for each person. [Infographic: How Gender Reassignment Surgery Works]

Altering the voice so that it better matches gender identity can also be important to those transitioning. "Here, we envision a world where a transgender person feels no need to change their voice or speech. That is, they would live in a world where people accept and respect them as whatever gender they claim, regardless of how their voice sounds," said Dr. Leah Helou, a speech pathologist who leads the University of Pittsburgh Voice Center's Transgender Voice and Communication services.

"However, in the absence of such radical and global acceptance, many trans individuals feel that their communication style is a top priority for making their external self congruent with their inner self," Helou said. "Our goal is to serve and support those people, while advocating for broader acceptance of the transgender population."

As mentioned earlier, altering one's appearance can also extend to facial surgery. Forehead contouring, jaw contouring, Adam's apple reduction, rhinoplasty, facelift surgery and neck-lift surgery are some of the operations that someone who is transitioning or has already transitioned may consider.

"Usually, the patients that are interested in facial feminization surgery have already been seen by a therapist and a hormone specialist that manages their hormone-replacement therapy," said Dr. Vartan Mardirossian, a facial feminization surgeon in Palm Beach, Florida. Mardirossian further explained that several consultations with a surgeon and realistic expectations are important to successful facial surgery.

Discrimination

Research has shown that transgender people are at high risk of experiencing prejudice and mental-health problems. The 2014 National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that 60 percent of health care providers refuse treatment to the transgender community. Additionally, the survey found that 64 to 65 percent of transs*xuals suffered physical or s*xual violence at work, and 63 to 78 percent suffered physical or s*xual violence at school.

Transgender people often face discrimination even when using the bathroom. In a 2016 poll of Americans by CBS and The New York Times, 46 percent of respondents said those who are transgender should use the bathrooms assigned to their birth genders, while 41 percent said such individuals should be able use the bathroom that matches their identities. In May 2016, the U.S. departments of Education and Justice stepped in to advise school districts to permit transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that matched the students' gender identities. In response, several states joined in a lawsuit, stating that the federal government had overreached its authority.

Because of discrimination, the su***de rate among transs*xual youth is high. Youth Su***de Prevention Program reports that more than 50 percent of transgender youth will attempt su***de at least once by their 20th birthdays.

Help for parents

Parents who think that their children may be transgender should seek the assistance of experts. "Determining if children are transgender can be a challenge and should be done with careful evaluation from a knowledgeable multidisciplinary team," said Safer.

It is important to note that many children question their gender identities without being transgender. Safer advised parents to be respectful of the child's feelings and recognize that there will be no actual medical intervention until the child begins puberty. Even then, initial medical treatments are reversible, he said.

What are the benefits of parental care?
(Contd.)

Parents play an irreplaceable role in the lives of their children. This vital relationship positively impacts a child's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The right of parents to maintain a strong involvement in their children's lives has been continually upheld by Supreme Court doctrine. It is deeply valued by millions of American families.
"They’re my foundation," 17-year-old Kristiana St. John says of her parents in a recent Associated Press interview. "My mom tells me that even if I do something stupid, she’s still going to love me no matter what. Just knowing that makes me feel very happy and blessed."
Kristiana was one of 1,280 young people asked to identify what makes them happy in a recent MTV/Associated Press survey. Overwhelmingly, the teenagers who were polled named spending time with family as their top answer. For nearly three quarters – 73 percent – their relationship with their parents is what makes them most happy.

QUICK FACTS ON PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Children who have parental support are likely to have better health as adults.
Students with involved parents tend to earn higher grades, have better social skills, and are more likely to graduate and go on to post-secondary education.
Children are more likely to be socially competent and have better communication skills when they have parents who are sensitive to their needs and emotions.
Teens who are monitored by their parents are one-quarter as likely as teens with "hands-off" parents to smoke, drink, and use drugs.

AN IRREPLACEABLE ROLE

The role of parents in a child’s life is an irreplaceable one. "Even when young children spend most of their waking hours in child care, parents remain the most influential adults in their lives," writes Dr. Jack Shonkoff, a board-certified pediatrician who sits on the faculty of the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
"The hallmark of [the parental] relationship is the readily observable fact that this special adult is not interchangeable with others."

"The hallmark of [the parental] relationship is the readily observable fact that this special adult is not interchangeable with others,” he continues. “A child may not care who cuts his hair or takes his money at the toy store, but he cares a great deal about who is holding her when she is unsure, comforts her when she is hurt, and shares special moments in her life."
The relationship that parents share with their children is one that impacts a child throughout his or her lifetime. Studies show that the benefits of parental involvement are manifold, affecting numerous areas of a child's life, including health and development, academic progress, and life choices.

TIME-HONORED RIGHTS

The Supreme Court has maintained that parents possess a fundamental constitutional right to raise their children as they see fit. "The child is not the mere creature of the State," the Supreme Court concluded in a 1925 ruling, "those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations."
"The child is not the mere creature of the State. Those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations.

1925 Supreme Court ruling
Pierce v. Society of Sister
The role of parents in the lives of their children has, historically, been one of unquestioned value, celebrated in cultures around the world. And the rights that come along with that responsibility—to direct the upbringing and education of one’s own children—have been consistently honored and upheld.

A RELATIONSHIP UNDER ATTACK

Seventeen-year-old Kristiana's description of her parents as her "foundation" says a lot about the power of a parent in a child’s life. But tragically the foundation of parenthood is being slowly eroded.
The child-parent relationship is now facing danger on two fronts.
Within the U.S. Federal Court system, a gradual change has been taking place. Today, instead of a robust defense of parental rights, one finds eroding support for parental rights from judges across the nation.
Many judges are now denying parental rights. Others are refusing to recognize them because they are not explicitly protected in the U.S. Constitution. While parental rights are at risk on the home front, a new threat is growing abroad. International law seeking to undermine the parental role is approaching on the horizon. Combined, these threats form a formidable storm front that could prove lethal to the child-parent relationship.
"Life affords no greater responsibility, no greater privilege, than the raising of the next generation."

C. Everett Koop
Former US Surgeon General
Visit The Attack on Parental Rights to read more about the advancing threats to the child-parent relationship.

PROTECTING THE VITAL CHILD-PARENT RELATIONSHIP

There is only one way to effectively secure the foundation of parenthood for this generation and the next: a constitutional amendment that explicitly protects the child-parent relationship from unreasonable government intrusion. A constitutional amendment will ensure that the rights of parents to raise their children are honored by federal court judges, and recognized above international law.

What are the benefits of parental care?
... The importance of parental effects on developmental rate

The evolution of parental care is beneficial if it facilitates offspring performance traits that are ultimately tied to offspring fitness. While this may seem self-evident, the benefits of parental care have received relatively little theoretical exploration. Here, we develop a theoretical model that elucidates how parental care can affect offspring performance and which aspects of offspring performance (e.g., survival, development) are likely to be influenced by care. We begin by summarizing four general types of parental care benefits. Care can be beneficial if parents

(1) increase offspring survival during the stage in which parents and offspring are associated,

(2) improve offspring quality in a way that leads to increased offspring survival and/or reproduction in the future when parents are no longer associated with offspring, and/or

(3) directly increase offspring reproductive success when parents and offspring remain associated into adulthood. We additionally suggest that parental control over offspring developmental rate might represent a substantial, yet underappreciated, benefit of care. We hypothesize that parents adjust the amount of time offspring spend in life-history stages in response to expected offspring mortality, which in turn might increase overall offspring survival, and ultimately, fitness of parents and offspring. Using a theoretical evolutionary framework, we show that parental control over offspring developmental rate can represent a significant, or even the sole, benefit of care. Considering this benefit influences our general understanding of the evolution of care, as parental control over offspring developmental rate can increase the range of life-history conditions (e.g., egg and juvenile mortalities) under which care can evolve.

..to be contd.

FOREWORD
This booklet presents the approved structure of
the 9-year Basic Education Curriculum as well as
the core and elective subjects. The high points of
the new curriculum include the- introduction of
Basic Technology and ICT, emphasis on creative
thinking, entrepreneurial skills, positive social and
cultural values as well as making French
Language one of the core subjects. An overview
of how the curriculum should be implemented is
also provided.
In 2004 Nigeria adopted the home-grown National
Economic Empowerment and Development
Strategy (NEEDS) as a response to global reforms
in the social and economic context. The core
elements of NEEDS are value re-orientation,
poverty eradication, job generation, wealth
creation and using education to empower the
people. In December 2005 the National Council on
Education (NCE) directed NERDC to develop a
school curriculum for the implementation of the
effective UBE programme. NERDC has developed a
high quality 9-year Basic Education Curriculum
that will not only facilitate the attainment of the
core elements of NEEDS but also the goals of EFA
and MDG.

The Federal Government introduced the Universal
Basic Education (UBE) programme in 1999 to
ensure unfettered access and equity to education
for the total development of the individual. Thus
the poor, the socially marginalized and vulnerable
groups can effectively develop their full capacities
and potentials. Through the UBE programme the
international goals of Education for All (EFA) as
well as the Millennium Development Goals
(MGDs) will be achieved.
