→ *Guidelines to answering comprehension passage*
1. Foremost,it is very important to have maximum concentration on a passage. Do not allow anything to distort your reasoning and concentration.
2. Develop a fast reading habit so as to save time. To do this,use past questions before UTME to work out the duration a passage can take you and try to improve on it. Likewise,learn how to read literary materials eg, magazines,novels,etc) at a very fast rate.
3. 3. It is advisable for students to read the questions under a passage before reading the passage for the first tine,so as to have a glimpse of what the passage is all about.Do not read options to the questions to avoid distraction.
4. Read through the questions after the passage and consider the options. Do not jump to conclusion in the answers because in most questions,all the options,are correct answers but only one of them generalizes other answers and therefore,most correct.
5. For a difficult to understand passage,it is advisable to read *paragraph by paragraph* and consider the questions and options alongside with the paragraphs you've been able to comprehend in the same order of a paragraph to a question
6. Candidates should have good understanding of phrases,clauses,antonyms and synonyms so as to be able to answer questions on them.
7. Do not pick an answer that is not within the *context* of the passage or meaning to a word which does not correlate with the way it is used in the passage.

3^x - 2^x = 65,find x.
This is the same thing as
[3^(x/2)]² - [2^(x/2)]² = 65
[3^(x/2)]² - [2^(x/2)]² = 13 × 5
*Let: 3^(x/2) = p and 2^(x/2) = q*
Therefore,
p² - q² = 13 × 5
(p + q)(p - q) = 13 × 5
*By equating both side*
p + q = 13 ............ equation (i)
p - q = 5 ........... equation (ii)
*Subtract equation (ii) from equation (i)*
∴ 2q = 8
*Divide through by 2*
∴ 2q/2 = 8/2
∴ q = 4
*Substitute 4 for q in equation (i)*
∴ p + q = 13
∴ p + 4 = 13
∴ p = 13 - 4
∴ p = 9
*Hence, p = 9 and q = 4*
RECALL THAT:
3^(x/2) = p ,
When, p = 9
3^(x/2) = 3²
*Since the base are equal*
∴ x/2 = 2
*Cross multiply*
∴ x = 4
AGAIN,
2^(x/2) = q ,
When, q = 4
2^(x/2) = 2²
*Since the base are equal*
∴ x/2 = 2
*Cross multiply*
∴ x = 4
*Therefore, x = 4 twice*
Hence, x = 4

121 = 1 + x + x² + x³ + x⁴
1 + x + x² + x³ + x⁴ - 121 = 0
x + x² + x³ + x⁴ - 120 = 0
x⁴ + x³ + x² + x - 120 = 0
x⁴ - 3x³ + 4x³ - 12x² + 13x² - 39x + 40x - 120 = 0
Bracket in two's
(x⁴ - 3x³) + (4x³ - 12x²) + (13x² - 39x) + (40x - 120) = 0
x³(x - 3) + 4x²(x - 3) + 13x(x - 3) + 40(x - 3) = 0
Factor out (x - 3)
(x - 3)(x³ + 4x² + 13x + 40) = 0
(x - 3) = 0 or (x³ + 4x² + 13x + 40) = 0
∴ x = 3 or (x³ + 4x² + 13x + 40) = 0
Consider: (x³ + 4x² + 13x + 40) = 0
Using Newton raphson method. ...
x = - 3.5285
Hence, (x + 3.5285) is a factor
Divide (x³ + 4x² + 13x + 40) by (x + 3.5285), using long division method, then solve the quotient quadratically
Hence,
x = 3, or x = - 3.5285, or x = - 0.2358 - 3.3587i or
x = - 0.2358 + 3.3587i
