🎓 PROFESSOR KAYODE MICHAEL SAMUEL ASSUMES DUTY AS PROVOST, UI POSTGRADUATE COLLEGE
A NEW CHAPTER OF SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP & AFRICAN MUSICAL ARTS
Professor Kayode Michael Samuel has officially assumed duty as the Provost of the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan, effective 1 August 2026.
A distinguished Nigerian musicologist, scholar and academic administrator, Professor Samuel has built a career around scholarship, leadership and the preservation and advancement of African musical knowledge.
His academic journey spans Law, Music and Musicology, beginning with a Diploma in Law in 1986 and later a Diploma in Music from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, where he won the Faculty Prize in 1988. He proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he graduated Best Student in Music in 1992 with a B.A. (Hons) in Music.
Following his NYSC, he spent over 16 years at St. Andrew’s College of Education, later Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, rising to the rank of Principal Lecturer.
In 2010, he joined the University of Ibadan and has since served in several academic and administrative capacities, including as Head of the Music Unit, Institute of African Studies, and later Deputy Provost (Academic), Postgraduate College.
He was promoted to the rank of Professor of Musicology and Musical Arts Education in 2022.
🌍 A SCHOLAR WITH A GLOBAL FOOTPRINT
Professor Samuel’s scholarship has earned international recognition through prestigious fellowships and research grants in Malaysia, Germany and Seychelles, including the African Humanities Program Postdoctoral Fellowship of the American Council of Learned Societies.
His research centres on African musicology, music education, indigenous knowledge systems and Yoruba musical traditions, exploring the musicality, sociality and cultural transmission of African musical practices.
He has also contributed to the development of the profession through memberships and leadership roles in major music and music-education associations, including serving two terms as Secretary General of the Pan African Society for Musical Arts Education (2009–2013).
Now, with decades of scholarship, teaching, research and administration behind him, Professor Kayode Michael Samuel takes on the responsibility of leading the Postgraduate College of the University of Ibadan.
