FUTMINNA 133RD INAUGURAL LECTURE:
During the 133rd inaugural lecture at the Federal University of Technology, Minna,
the Vice-Chancellor of the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Prof. Abdulrahman Asipita Salawu, made a strong case for how Nigeria can fast-track its industrial growth.
Speaking on the theme "Nature to Nature: The Mirage of Materials Longevity
The metallurgical engineering professor pointed out that the country's ongoing habit of exporting raw minerals and importing finished products is holding back true economic independence.
Instead, he urged the nation to focus on local processing, proper material management, and building robust, practical partnerships between universities and industrial sectors.
Drawing from his own extensive research, Prof. Salawu shared several innovative breakthroughs that could change the game for local manufacturing.
These include; using borax for safer gold extraction, turning agricultural waste into eco-friendly, asbestos-free brake pads, developing reliable anti-corrosion coatings for major industrial pipelines, and even creating biomaterials designed to assist with bone repairs.
The lecture essentially served as a blueprint for how local engineering expertise can solve domestic challenges and keep economic value right here at home rather than shipping it abroad.
The well-attended event brought together top academics, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and esteemed traditional rulers, notably featuring the Ohinoyi of Ebira Land in attendance.
The ceremony wrapped up with FUTMINNA’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, presenting an award and certificate to Prof. Salawu in recognition of his significant contributions to knowledge, surrounded by colleagues, friends, and well-wishers
