Of two minds 10/04/2016

Working in a foreign language is certainly hard. It is easier to argue fluently or to make a point subtly when not trying to call up rarely used vocabulary or construct sentences correctly. English-speakers can try to bulldoze opposing arguments through sheer verbiage, hold the floor to prevent anyone else from getting a word in or lighten the mood with a joke. All of these things are far harder in a foreign language. http://www.economist.com/news/books-and-arts/21696489-advantages-working-your-own-language-are-obvious-those-working-foreign?fsrc=scn/fb/te/pe/ed/oftwominds

How The Language You Speak Changes Your View Of The World 10/04/2016

Just as regular exercise gives your body some biological benefits, mentally controlling two or more languages gives your brain cognitive benefits. This mental flexibility pays big dividends especially later in life: the typical signs of cognitive ageing occur later in bilinguals – and the onset of age-related degenerative disorders such as dementia or Alzheimer’s are delayed in bilinguals by up to five years.http://www.iflscience.com/editors-blog/how-language-you-speak-changes-your-view-world-0

How The Language You Speak Changes Your View Of The World Bilinguals get all the perks. Better job prospects, a cognitive boost and even protection against dementia. Now new research shows that they can also view the world in different ways depending on the specific language they are operating in.

Example of Simultaneous Interpreting 02/03/2016

In the United States, criminal courts are obligated by law to provide non-English speaking people (otherwise known as LEP individuals) with the trained Court-eligible or Court-certified interpreters. The role of a court interpreter (or the interpreter in general) is still not widely understood. Plenty of people, including family members, friends, and relatives of the accused sometimes act as a self-appointed interpreters (this is not allowed in courtrooms) and the bilingual attorneys offer more headaches than help to the interpreters. When it comes to interpreting, plenty of bilingual people consider themselves "experts" in the field. However, the job of an interpreter, especially that of the Court interpreter is highly complex; it requires specialized knowledge of the Court system, legal terminology, laws of ethics, and plenty of experience. It is never as easy as it looks. Here is a sample of the simultaneous Court interpreting session, so judge for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vfpRO2mw9k

Example of Simultaneous Interpreting This video shows an example of simultaneous interpreting. Simultaneous interpretation occurs while the primary speaker is talking.
