Four formulas cover almost every mensuration question they set.

Q: Find the area of a triangle with base 12 cm and height 9 cm.
A. 21 cm² B. 54 cm² C. 108 cm² D. 216 cm²

ANS: B — 54 cm²
Area = ½ × 12 × 9 = 54 cm².

WORKING
A = ½ × base × height
A = ½ × 12 × 9
A = 54 cm²

TIP: If they give you the DIAMETER, halve it before you use πr². That is the most common trap.

TIP: Count from the producer. Producer, then 1st consumer, then 2nd. The plant is never a consumer.

The substance that dissolves is the solute. Water is the solvent.

TIP: Stirring and crushing make it dissolve FASTER. They do not make it dissolve MORE.

Efficiency = M.A. ÷ V.R. × 100, so M.A. = 80 × 5 ÷ 100 = 4.

TIP: Mechanical advantage and velocity ratio are both ratios. Neither one has a unit.

Profit percentage is always over the COST price. That one line settles most of them.

Q: A trader bought a bag for ₦1,500 and sold it for ₦1,800. What is the percentage profit?
A. 16.7% B. 20% C. 25% D. 30%

ANS: B — 20%
Profit is 300, and 300 ÷ 1500 × 100 = 20%.

WORKING
profit = 1800 − 1500 = 300
profit % = 300 ÷ 1500 × 100
over the COST price
= 20%

TIP: Write CP, SP and profit in a column before you touch a percentage. It stops every mix-up.

Evaporation would leave the salt but lose the water. Distillation collects the water.

TIP: Ask yourself one question: is the solid dissolved or not? That decides everything.

ANS: C — ₦3,000
3 + 5 = 8 parts, so one part is 600. Bola gets 5 × 600 = ₦3,000.

WORKING
3 + 5 = 8 parts
4800 ÷ 8 = 600 per part

= ₦3,000

TIP: Check your answer by adding the two shares. They must come back to the original total.

Only tt is short, and it fills one of the four boxes.

TIP: Draw the Punnett square even when the question looks easy. Two seconds, and no guessing.
