THIS IS HOW TO DETERMINE WHICH HEAT SOURCE IS BEST FOR YOUR POULTRY FARM?

If you are brooding birds in this wet season, you cannot afford to play with heat. If this alone is not gotten right, your birds will end up stunted through out life.

In determining which heat source is best for your farm, you should consider the cost of buying the tools needed to set up the heating system, the cost of running the system and the labour requirement for operating each source.

Sources of heat for the farm can come from the following;

1. Electricity
2. Gas
3. Kerosene
4. Charcoal

The cleanest of them all is electricity.
The one requiring the most labour is charcoal

To use electricity, you will need those 200-watt orange coloured incandescent electric bulbs or a commercially available electric brooder. The main running cost is electricity bill.

Gas brooders are available in the market. Most of them use cooking gas to produce the required heat. The major cost after buying the brooder is the cost of refilling gas.

Kerosene lanterns and charcoal pots are not particularly clean sources of heat but they can be used if managed properly. Their cost is majorly the kerosene and charcoal burnt to produce heat.

It is always important to do a cost and labour analysis before deciding which option to go for.

Which option do you consider the best for you?

Tell us your reasons in the comments.

*HOW TO PREPARE BITTER LEAF (Vernonia amygdalina) EXTRACT FOR TREATING COCCIDIOSIS*

Coccidiosis is the disease that causes poultry birds to pass out blood in their poo.

Bitter leaf has proven very effective in preventing and treating Coccidiosis

Here is how to prepare bitter leaf extract for use on your farm.

i. Gather some bitter leaves. The quantity depends on the volume of juice you are hoping to get and the number of chickens you want to treat.

ii. Remove the leaves from the stem and rinse them in a bowl to remove sand and
dirt.

iii. Put the leaves in a mortar or kitchen blender and add just a little water. Just enough water to pound or blend the leaves easily.

iv. Use a Filter cloth to sieve the juice into a container.

If you have followed the process carefully, the bitter leaf extract should be as thick as extracted orange juice

If this is what you have, then use the dosage below for your birds

Prevention: 20ml per liter of drinking water three mornings in a week

Treatment: 40ml per liter of drinking water for 5 consecutive days

This will work in preventing and stopping bloody stools in your birds.

I wish you the best on your farms

Dear Poultry Farmer, 80% of the health problems on your farm will go away if you handle the litter on the floor of your Poultry house properly.

The litter is the most important part of the poultry house as far as your birds are concerned.

It is;
The bed for your birds to sleep on
The cushion for them to relax on
The dinning table for them to feed on
The toilet for them to defecate on
The maternity bed for Layers
It is also the floor you step on while attending to them

With the different functions of the litter, it is only right that you pay proper attention to it.

There are only 3 principles for proper litter maintenance.

i. It should be dry at all times. Not damp or wet

ii. The particles should always be loose. It shouldnโ€™t be sticky, be allowed to form lumps or cake.

iii. It should be as fresh as possible without offensive smell from the litter material itself or the buildup of p**p

Many of the diseases you battle with are simply related to the toilet nature of the litter.

If you can eliminate the p**p buildup effect and keep the place fresh and dry by changing the litter as often as necessary, your birds will grow bigger and healthier.

Donโ€™t allow laziness put your invstmnt at risk

The cost of buying drugs is more than the cost of buying more fresh litter material. Choose your cost wisely.

*Tell me in the comments which Litter Material you prefer to use and why you prefer it*

I wish you happy Chickvestment

Dear Poultry Farmer,

Here is how to chase the mosquitoes disturbing your birds away.

The first rains have begun to fall in some places and with the return of rain comes more mosquitoes๐ŸฆŸ

These tiny flying creatures carry a range of disease-causing organisms that affect poultry birds.

Mosquitoes bite/ feed on infected free range animals, pick diseases from them and subsequently transmit them to healthy birds as they bite and feed on them.

Fowl Pox is the most common poultry disease transmitted by mosquitoes. After ingesting the pox from a sick bird, mosquitoes can retain it in their body for more than a month and eventually transfer it to other healthy birds they come in contact with

Broilers affected by fowl pox are stunted in growth while laying birds experience a drop in egg production. This is aside the physical painful growth on their skin.

It is therefore Important to depopulate mosquitoes as much as possible.

๐™‹๐™๐™€๐™‘๐™€๐™‰๐™๐™„๐™Š๐™‰ ๐˜ผ๐™‰๐˜ฟ ๐˜พ๐™Š๐™‰๐™๐™๐™Š๐™‡

Prevention should start with the clearing of grasses around the farm and the disposal of old tins, tyres, and other forms of garbage that can hold water as stagnant water is a breeding site for mosquitoes.

You can keep mosquitoes out of the chicken house ๐—ฏ๐˜† ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ต ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€ (๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜€๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜) to the windows and doors.

There are chemical ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜๐™ž๐™™๐™š๐™จ available for controlling mosquitoes but some of them are not safe for your birds so I will not be talking about them.

I will rather give you a few common organic ways of controlling mosquitoes.

These are two of the most well known and easily grown plants that repel mosquitoes. Plant these around your poultry house to keep mosquitoes away.

2. ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  ๐‘๐จ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ has been shown to chase mosquito away. Doing this every few days will chase the mosquitoes away

3. Smoking your Poultry space with ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐›๐ฌ such as the boiling of mango leaves, bitter bush, e.t.c can also keep mosquitoes away. This should be done before you bring your birds in for brooding

Do not wait until your poultry birds begin to show symptoms of infection before you act. Be proactive in controlling mosquitoes

I write to you because I care

THIS TRAINING IS FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO START THEIR POULTRY FARM THIS YEAR

The mistake most newcomers to poultry make is to underrate the business and what is required to be successful in it.

A lot of these new farmers end up failing and leaving the business disappointed.

The problem is not with the business. The problem is with the farmer who did not seek knowledge and training before starting. There is no business you will succeed at without adequate knowledge or training.

Now, I know and understand poultry like the back of my hand. I have raised several thousands of birds over the last many years. I have also trained thousands of farmers and helped dozens of others to set up and manage highly efficient poultry farms.

This 2023, I want to help you acquire the knowledge you need before starting your farm.

This weekend 15th to the 17th of March 2024, I shall be teaching in the POULTRY FOUNDATION CLASS. The class will teach the basics of poultry farming to all interested persons.

Those who will benefit from the teaching are those who are interested in starting Broilers, Layers, Turkey or Noiler farms on a small scale. By small scale, I refer to a farm size below 1,000 birds per Production batch.

Also, those who recently started but do not have much experience will benefit too.
Farm hands and new staff in poultry farms will also benefit a lot.

The training will cover the following areas:

1. Types of birds that can be kept for commercial purpose, their differences and their profitability

2. How to construct a proper cage or house for your birds

3. Basic tools and materials you need on your farm

4. How to calculate the financial amount you need to start your farm

5. How and where to buy Day old Chicks

6. Types of feed and how to feed your birds

7. How to prevent diseases in a poultry farm

8. How and where to sell your birds or eggs

For the 3 days this class will last, all participants will have the opportunity to ask all questions on their mind. I will be there to answer each and every question bothering you.

I am charging nothing for this service. IT IS ENTIRELY FREE

If this sounds like what you need at the moment, please use the link in the comment to join the WhatsApp teaching group immediately.

If you know someone who needs this, tag them immediately so they can take advantage of this opportunity.

The fight is against poverty not against a fellow human.

Dear Poultry farmer,

Your village people are after your downfall.

They are the ones responsible for the mortalities on your farm. They donโ€™t want you to make any profit. Their aim is to drive you out of business.

But I will expose them today.

Do you remember ๐๐ข๐  ๐š๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐ฒ ๐Œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐จ all when you were still kids in the village? She is one of those who does not like you. Every night, she sneaks into your pen and injects fowl pox into your birds.

She is not alone.

Even the lanky, dark and tall uncle from your mothers side. Hope you remember him? ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐€๐ ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐‹๐ข๐ณ๐š๐ซ๐. He comes in the afternoon when nobody is around and distributes coccidiosis around your pen. He wants your birds to poo blood and die.

Granny from your motherโ€™s side is also involved. ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐Œ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐๐š๐›๐š ๐‘๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฌ at night. They usually come with hands filled with parasites and bacteria. They go round your feeders and drop them inside, steal some of your feed and run away before day break.

I didnโ€™t want to mention ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐‚๐จ๐œ๐ค๐ซ๐จ๐š๐œ๐ก your in-law. But it is time to expose her. She is a big pretender. She is the one secretly distributing virus from one place to the others. She will enter the toilet, pick virus and come and mix in the feed and water of your birds.

I know all of them and my work today is to expose these your village people since they have refused to repent.

Now that you know the real cause of your problems, go and send the real village people packing from your farm.

I write to you because I care

You can keep rats and other unwanted feed consumers away from your poultry feed using this simple construction.

Do you think this concept is effective?

06/03/2024

Buy a thermometer.
Learn to use it properly.

It will save you alot of wasted efforts and maybe cost too.

Your birds will grow o. But if you want maximum growth, you should endeavor to keep temperature within the correct range.

For chicks, the air temperature requirement for the brooding room at a RH of 40-60% is as stated below

Day 1-3: 33-35ยฐC

Day 4-7: 32-33 ยฐC

Day 8-14: 29-31ยฐC

Day 15-21: 26-29ยฐC

After brooding, monitor the distribution of your birds in their house to know how to adjust the temperature to their comfort.

If they are too cold, they will huddle together.
If the temperature is too hot, they will pant with their mouth and keep their feathers away from their body. If they are comfortable, they will be evenly spread round the house and be happily moving around.

May our birds do well.

The Poultry Foundation Class is coming up soon for those who want to set up their farms or learn how to care for their birds.

Things like what is shown in the picture is common during the heat season.

Those chicks were lost during transportation from hatchery to farm.

That is the major reason why chicks are transported in the night or very early in the morning before the sun comes up.

Even at that, your chicks may still arrive to you stressed from heat and the bouncing of the rough road especially if they had to travel over a long distance.

If nothing is done to relieve them of the built up stress, they will begin to drop one by one within the first 3 days. You will be losing them without any explanation as to why they can't survive.

1. Examine the chicks on arrival to see their state of stress. Stressed chicks will feel weak and have a higher body temperature than normal.

The more stressed they are, the more attention you need to give them.

2. Add glucose to the drinking water of the birds. One heaped tablespoon full per litre of water is sufficient.

The normal human glucose can be used.

3. Teach your birds to drink by dipping their beak into the water. Do this to a few of them and others will gradually learn from them.

4. Give individual attention to weak chicks. Hold them and help them take a few gulps of the glucose water. Do this to the weak chicks one after the other.

5. Ensure all the chicks have found food and begin to eat within the first hour of getting water. Ensure you implement the ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ rule for your chicks especially this heat period

6. Monitor their reaction to your heat source. If there is no need for the extra heating due to the weather, please remove the heat source.

7. Check on your chicks every 1-2 hours and assist those needing help to eat and drink.

The greatest risk exists within the first 3 days. Any chick that survives into the 4th day has a high chance of surviving till maturity if you take care of it well.

Remember that brooding is a full time job. You can't complain that the work is too much. That's what we signed up for as Poultry farmers.

May our farms be good.
