*Dangers/Risks of Adolescent Age :
Adolescence is when the brain and body change fast. It’s a critical age because choices made now affect adulthood. Here are the key dangers, explained simply for students:
*1. Physical/Health Dangers*
1. *Early S*x & STIs/Teen Pregnancy* - Lack of knowledge + peer pressure can lead to unplanned pregnancy, HIV, and other infections that affect school + future.
2. *Drug & Substance Abuse* - Alcohol, codeine, tramadol, smoking, “shisha”. These damage the brain, reduce memory for exams, and can lead to addiction.
3. *Poor Nutrition/Fad Diets* - Skipping meals, eating only junk food, or “slimming teas” can cause anemia, stunted growth, or eating disorders.
4. *Accidents/Risk-Taking* - Reckless bike riding, fighting, or “internet challenges” because the brain’s risk-control part isn’t fully developed yet.
*2. Emotional & Mental Health Dangers*
5. *Depression & Anxiety* - Body changes, bullying, exam pressure. If hidden, it can lead to poor grades or self-harm thoughts.
6. *Low Self-Esteem* - Comparing body, skin, phone, or grades on TikTok/Instagram can cause sadness and “I’m not good enough” thinking.
7. *Suicidal Thoughts* - When problems feel too big and there’s no adult to talk to. This is why speaking up matters.
*3. Social & Academic Dangers*
8. *Bad Peer Influence* - Friends pushing you to skip class, fight, steal, or join cult/gangs. “If everyone is doing it” is a common trap.
9. *School Dropout/Poor Grades* - Distraction from phone, social media, boy/girlfriend issues, or part-time work can ruin BECE/WAEC results.
10. *Online Dangers* - Cyberbullying, fraud “yahoo”, po*******hy, or talking to strangers online. Can lead to blackmail or exposure.
11. *Cultism & Violence* - Many students get initiated in JSS3/SS1 because they want to “belong” or look tough.
*How to Stay Safe - The 3 P’s for Adolescents*
1. *Protect your Future*: School first. Every decision: “Will this help my WAEC/JAMB result in 3 years?”
2. *Pick your Friends Wisely*: 5 good friends > 50 bad friends. Avoid pressure to do what you know is wrong.
3. *Parent/Teacher Talk*: Have at least 1 trusted adult you can talk to without fear. Bottling it up is the biggest danger.
*For Teachers/Parents*: Watch for signs - sudden drop in grades, isolation, new secretive friends, anger, or changes in sleeping/eating.
