CWI CONDUCTS STRATEGIC MEETING WITH YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION FELLOWS

CWI hosted Youth Climate Action Fellows from Borno State at its office for a strategic engagement session with Maryam Jabbo, the Executive Director.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration, community engagement, and advancing climate action initiatives across the North-East region. Discussions also centred on effective strategies for raising awareness on climate change, promoting environmental sustainability, and empowering young people to become active advocates for climate resilience within their communities.

Earlier this month, CWI successfully concluded a six-week intensive training programme for Youth Climate Action Volunteers (YCAV) across six states North-East Nigeria. The training equipped participants with knowledge and practical skills on climate advocacy, environmental protection, and community mobilisation.

Speaking during the meeting, the Executive Director, Maryam Jabbo, encouraged the fellows to remain committed to driving positive environmental change and taking climate action awareness to grassroots communities. She emphasized the importance of youth participation in addressing climate challenges and building sustainable futures.

The fellows also shared their experiences from the training programme and outlined plans for community-based climate awareness campaigns, sensitization activities, and local advocacy initiatives aimed at promoting environmental responsibility and resilience.

On this International Day for Biodiversity, CWI reflects on what this year's theme "Acting Locally for Global Impact" means for communities across Borno, and Nigeria as a whole.

Nigeria is rich in biodiversity, from its rainforests and mangroves in the south to the savannahs and wetlands of the northeast, is a national treasure worth protecting.

From the shrinking shores of Lake Chad to the degradation of the Sahel's fragile ecosystems, Borno State stands at the frontline of biodiversity loss. Decades of climate change, desertification, deforestation and conflict have stripped communities of the natural resources they depend on for food, water and livelihoods. The Lake Chad Basin, once one of Africa's largest freshwater bodies, has lost over 90% of its surface area threatening fish stocks, farmland and the survival of millions.

Despite these challenges, local action remains our greatest hope. Farmers practicing climate-smart agriculture, women-led groups restoring degraded land and communities protecting indigenous tree species are proof that change begins at home. Every tree planted in Borno's dry landscapes, every sustainable fishing practice on Lake Chad and every effort to reduce bush burning contributes to a healthier planet.

CWI calls on individuals, communities and local leaders across Nigeria to take ownership of their environment, because the decisions made in our villages, farms and markets today will determine the future of our ecosystems tomorrow. Local actions here are not small, they are essential, urgent and deeply connected to global survival.

CWI Concludes Six-Week Online Training Session for YCAV Fellows.

As part of its Youth Climate Action initiative, CWI successfully concluded a six-weeks online training session for 90 fellows selected across the six states of Northeast Nigeria.

The fellows are expected to drive climate action and community engagement initiatives within their respective communities and states, contributing to environmental sustainability and youth-led advocacy efforts.

Over the last six-week training, participants were equipped with knowledge and practical skills on key climate and environmental issues.

The sessions covered an overview of CWI and its code of conduct, introduction to climate change, including its causes, evidence, global and local impacts within Nigeria and the Northeast, National Climate Policy, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and climate justice.

The training also explored Climate Action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 and its connection to other SDGs, while emphasizing the role of youths in advancing climate action.

Fellows were further trained on volunteerism and environmental stewardship, focusing on the role of volunteers in climate action, principles of environmental stewardship, and promoting green lifestyles and sustainable choices.

Practical climate action activities formed another key component of the training, with sessions on tree planting and afforestation basics, waste management and recycling campaigns, water conservation practices, and community clean-up drives.

In the final phase of the training participants received guidance on advocacy and climate campaigns, including awareness creation methods, social and behavioral change, the use of social media for climate advocacy, creativity, innovation, and digital storytelling.

Fellows were also trained on assessing and documenting local climate impacts through data collection and report writing, alongside sessions on CWI’s climate action and environmental protection policy and pledge.

The program further reflects CWI’s commitment to working closely with communities in promoting climate action initiatives, environmental sustainability, and grassroots advocacy.

Through empowering young people with knowledge and practical skills, CWI continues to strengthen community-driven solutions aimed at addressing climate and environmental challenges across the region.

The training equipped participants with the tools and capacity needed to champion climate awareness, inspire community participation, and promote sustainable environmental practices at the grassroots level.
