DYSLEXIA; The number "1 " learning challenge in Children.
There are many types of learning disability in children. Early detection is very important as it allows for earlier educational interventions and better outcome for the child.
This is because when a condition goes undiagnosed, children are at risk of falling behind, consistently under-performing, feeling uncomfortable in front of peers and receiving negative attention from parents and teachers. All these can cause an otherwise highly motivated child to develop low self esteem and lose interest in school.
There many types of learning disabilities but the most common one is dyslexia
Dyslexia
Dyslexia is the most common form of all learning disabilities in children. It is a language-based disability in which a person has trouble understanding words, sentences, or paragraphs and in most cases, it is caused by hereditary factors.
People with dyslexia often have problems with processing or understanding what they read or hear. Children with dyslexia have difficulty in learning to read despite traditional instruction, an average intelligence, and adequate motivation and opportunity to learn. This is however not due to mental retardation or brain damage as some people erroneously assume. As a matter of fact, most people with learning disabilities possess an average to above-average IQ.
Signs that your child may be suffering from dyslexia.
It’s important for parents and teachers to understand that no two individuals with a learning difficulty will be affected in exactly the same way. The impact may be moderate or severe with symptoms often starting to show when a child begins learning how to read and write.
That said, the first sign of dyslexia is usually delayed speech development when compared with other children of same age. This may have been noticed by the child's parents very early, but it will become more obvious, alongside other symptoms after the child has started school. Some of these symptoms are:
• Delayed early language development
• Problems recognizing the differences between similar sounds or segmenting words.
• Slow learning of new vocabulary words
• Difficulty copying from the board or a book.
• Difficulty with learning reading, writing, and spelling skills
• A child may not be able to remember content, even if it involves a favorite video or storybook.
• The child may appear to be uncoordinated and have difficulty with organized sports or games.
• Difficulty with left and right is common, and often dominance for either hand has not been established.
• Commonly, a child may have difficulty remembering or understanding what he hears.
• Recalling sequences of things or more than one command at a time can be difficult.
• Parts of words or parts of whole sentences may be missed, and words can come out sounding funny.
• The wrong word or a similar word may be used instead.
• Children struggling with this problem may know what they want to say but have trouble finding the actual words to express their thoughts.
• Putting letters and figures the wrong way, example writing d instead of b, or 6 instead of 9.
• Confusing the order of letters and errors when reading out loud.
• Slow writing speed and poor handwriting
• Difficulty learning the names and sounds of letters.
What to do if you suspect that your child has learning disability.
It is important to know that a learning disability is different from an intellectual disability. A learning disability is a disability that affects a person’s ability to process information. The good news that it is a condition that can managed without adverse effect on the child education especially if it is observed early.
In the past for example, most children with dyslexia or ADD, ADHD were labeled as lazy, accused of not paying attention in class and are severely disciplined for being disruptive in school. However, with a few adjustments and some targeted strategic work, he or she can learn to cope with attention difficulties. Like ADHD, dyslexia can also be managed with expert care, patience, and lots of encouragements from parents and teachers.
So if you suspect that your child has learning difficulty, you may need to discuss with his or her school teacher on the possibility of paying him more attention, being patient with him and shielding him from negative peer pressure that will affect his confidence and further complicate his problems.
Moreover, if the Child's symptoms are very severe , his school teacher may not be able to give him the special care he needs. It would best to get him an experienced home or lesson teacher that is specialized in handling such children with special need.
Specific learning difficulties like dyslexia can make it difficult and sometimes impossible for a child to achieve the same results as his or her peers in a traditional classroom setting. Some children face a constant struggle with reading and writing and many are at risk for developing low self-esteem, particularly when their condition goes not diagnosed and/or untreated.
The thing to remember is that there are alternative learning approaches, strategies, and tools that can help students with learning difficulties achieve their full potential at school. Moreover, a positive attitude and plenty of encouragement from parents and teachers can do wonders when it comes to inspiring these children to stay motivated and persevere.
