📚 IELTS READING: How to Move from Band 5.5 to 7.5
Many Nigerian IELTS candidates lose marks not because the passages are difficult, but because of poor strategy.
✅ Tip 1: Stop reading every word.
Learn to skim for the main idea and scan for specific information. IELTS tests speed as much as understanding.
✅ Tip 2: Build your vocabulary daily.
Read BBC News, articles, and academic texts for 20–30 minutes every day. Focus on synonyms, as IELTS rarely repeats the exact words from the passage.
✅ Tip 3: Practice with a timer.
You have just 60 minutes for 40 questions. Train yourself to complete each passage within 18–20 minutes.
Remember: A Band 7.5 reader is not necessarily smarter than a Band 5.5 reader—they simply have better reading techniques and time management.

FIVE (5) REASONS WHY PEOPLE FAIL IELTS 😩
Most IELTS failures are caused by poor preparation strategy rather than poor English ability. Understanding the exam structure, improving vocabulary and grammar, practicing under timed conditions, and applying the correct strategies significantly increases the chances of achieving a higher band score.
👉 Weak/Lack of Test Strategies
Some candidates know English reasonably well but fail because they lack IELTS-specific strategies. Some of which includes skimming and scanning in reading, predicting answers in listening, structuring essays clearly in writing, speaking fluently without long pauses. There ar emore deeper strategies tha guarantees desired Band score and these differ from one module or question type to another. Without these strategies, candidates lose marks even if their English ability is adequate.
👉 Poor Understanding of the Test Format
Many candidates go into IELTS without fully understanding the structure of the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking modules. Each section has strict timing, different question types and unique marking criteria. When candidates are unfamiliar with these formats, they waste time trying to figure out what to do instead of answering correctly.
👉 Weak Time Management
Time pressure is a major challenge in IELTS.
For example, the Reading test requires answering 40 questions in 60 minutes while the Writing section requires completing two tasks within 60 minutes. Candidates often spend too much time on difficult questions or on one writing task, leaving insufficient time for the rest of the test.
👉 Poor Vocabulary and Grammar Control
A limited vocabulary and frequent grammar mistakes reduce scores, particularly in Writing and Speaking. IELTS examiners assess lexical resource (range of vocabulary), grammatical range and accuracy and other crucial aspects of a candidates response. Candidates who rely on basic vocabulary or incorrect sentence structures struggle to achieve higher band scores.
👉 Lack of Practice Under Real Exam Conditions
Many candidates practice casually but never simulate real exam conditions. Without timed practice:
a. listening concentration drops
b. reading speed remains slow
c. writing tasks exceed the time limit
Practicing with authentic IELTS questions under timed conditions is essential to build exam stamina. If you want to know more or need help in your IELTS preparation, comment “STRATEGY” or join my free webinar group:

Sometimes the journey may seem difficult or unclear, but with the right approach and strategy, success is inevitable.
If you have had a first experience sitting for IELTS exam and failed, it is very easy to think it’s impossible to pass it… it’s very difficult or it’s just beyond your reach. Truth is, like every problem, there’s always a solution for it. You just have to use the right approach and strategy to solve the problem.
If you are in the wrong ship heading towards the wrong direction, no matter how much you increase the speed you still can’t get to your desired destination - therefore speed becomes insignificant. Conversely, if you just disembark and get on the right ship and right track/direction, then and only then would speed have an impact in reaching your destination.
You can learn the right approach to cracking IELTS and I would love to guide you in this journey. Send a dm let’s discuss further 😎

WHAT DOES THE IELTS BAND SCORES MEAN?
Usually, “counting the cost” before starting out on a project or journey is very important. In the same way, one of the things you need to know and questions you need to ask yourself when preparing to write IELTS test are:
1. What do the band scores mean?
2. What bandscore am I aiming at?
3. How do I achieve my aimed band score?
These questions are pivotal to your level of focus 🎯 and success 🙌🏼. Once you are able to answer these questions in your mind, your approach to study pattern and study materials becomes defined and you can begin to work towards it.
Good planning = Good Success ✅
I have demystified question 1 already in the image post. However, you will have to provide answer to question 2 yourself. As to question 3, you will need a quality time of study and solve lots of past questions. Unfortunately, many of the students who have joined my IELTS Master Class had one thing in common - they realized that studying hard alone didnt help and I strongly agree! 👍🏻

Each module has its unique strategy to help you crack the exam and without implementing the right strategy, then you are sure IELTS will beat you flawlessly.
