Provost Moves to Transform College Infrastructure

Barely four days into her tenure as the 5th Substantive Provost of the College, Dr. V.N. Ejezie has signaled a decisive commitment to institutional renewal by prioritising critical internal road projects. She emphasised that constructing motorable roads from Uguru Hall through the students’ hostels, extending to the Second Gate and the New Administrative Block on the Main Campus, will confer on the institution the dignity and functionality of a modern centre of learning while enhancing its appeal to prospective students.

Dr. Ejezie made these remarks on Thursday, May 21, 2026, during a facility tour with senior officials from Abuja. Arriving on campus by 7:00 a.m., she personally inspected the progress at the New Administrative Block before assessing the road network and drainage systems serving the hostels.

She noted that immediate intervention was required on the internal roads to provide seamless access to core academic facilities. She also inspected the drainage channels and sought proactive measures to address drainage challenges and forestall recurrent flooding.

The Provost expressed strong confidence that these early actions would rapidly give the College a new, dignified appearance. She called on all stakeholders to collaborate in building an institution that would benefit the future generations.

Accompanying the Provost on the tour were the College Registrar, Dr. (Mrs) B.C. Nkah; Director of Works and Services, Engr. Jude Ezemezue; Director of Procurement, Mr. Simeon Chioke; Deputy Director of Works (rtd), Ichie B.U. Agwunobi; the College Public Relations Officer, Sam Otti; and other senior officials.

Prof Okoli Bows Out as Provost

The curtains fell on the eight-year tenure of Professor Theresa Obumnene Okoli as Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, Anambra State. The College community on Sunday, May 17, 2026 gathered in celebration of a legacy marked by service, transformation, and institutional advancement.

The thanksgiving service at Christ the King Chaplaincy, FCE(T) Umunze, was filled with reflection and gratitude as Professor Okoli and her Management team offered a solemn sacrifice of thanksgiving to God for the successful completion of their stewardship. Other Principal Officers present for the thanksgiving include the Deputy Provost, Dr TAK Nzeribe, the Registrar, Dr B.C Nkah, the Bursar, Ethelbert Echedo and the Librarian, Dr Agada Arome Samson.

Speaking on behalf of the outgoing Management team, Professor Okoli expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for His sustaining grace throughout their years of service. She affirmed that her administration had discharged its responsibilities with diligence and commitment to institutional progress, while praying that the incoming Provost, Dr Virginia Nonye Ejezie, and her Management team would surpass the achievements recorded during her tenure.

The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Msgr Luke Anameze, former Chaplain of Christ the King Chaplaincy, FCE(T) Umunze, as Chief Celebrant. The atmosphere resonated with hymns of thanksgiving and joyful worship as members of the College community and the wider Body of Christ lifted their voices in praise.
Delivering the homily, Rev. Fr Kevin Ezemmaduka reflected on the providence and faithfulness of God in the life and leadership journey of the outgoing Provost. He thanked God for granting Professor Okoli the grace, wisdom, and sound health required to pilot the affairs of the institution over eight years and invoked divine guidance and sustaining grace upon the incoming Provost and her Management team.

He also stressed the need for good use of social media and urged the College community to desist from such diatribe that wounds their neighbours.

Other priests that concelebrated the Mass include: Rev. Fr Benjamin Odika, immediate past Chaplain of the Chaplaincy; Rev. Fr Dominic Okezue; Rev. Fr Jerry Okafor; Rev. Fr Umeojiakor; Rev. Fr Philip Okoye; Rev. Fr Casmir Osigwe; alongside several religious sisters who joined in the liturgical celebration.

The thanksgiving ceremony attracted a distinguished assembly of dignitaries from academia, government, and the private sector. Among those present were the Provost of Federal College of Education, Ehamufu, Professor Pauline Ngozi Ikwuegbu; the Provost of Federal College of Education, Ofeme Ohuhu, Umuahia, Dr Titus Ezeme and his wife; the Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area, Hon. Shedrack Azubuike; the Chief Executive Officer of Juhel Nigeria Ltd., Dr Ifeanyi Okoye; and the Chief Medical Director of St Catherine's Hospital, Umunze, Dr H. I. Okoli, among other guests and well-wishers.

The occasion equally provided an opportunity for the College community to celebrate the enduring achievements of Professor Okoli's administration. Her tenure witnessed the completion of over 40 building projects, reflecting a deliberate commitment to physical development and institutional renewal.

Particular commendation was accorded to her visionary efforts in strengthening the College's internally generated revenue through the establishment of a modern water treatment plant and a bakery enterprise renowned for the production of FECETU bread.

Professor Okoli's administration also demonstrated remarkable commitment to academic staff development. Through sustained support and the strategic deployment of TETFund sponsorship opportunities, over 100 academic staff successfully obtained doctorate degrees from both local and international universities.

Furthermore, the number of Chief Lecturers increased significantly from forty in 2018 to 85 during her tenure. These Chief Lecturers are equivalent of Associate Professors in a university system.

Institutional growth under her leadership extended to academic expansion and approval of the College as a degree awarding institution. While the College had commenced 13 degree programmes in affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, during the 2011/2012 academic session, Professor Okoli's administration secured a historic milestone with the approval of the College as a degree-awarding institution with the approval of Dual Mandate for selected Colleges by the Federal Government.
The National Universities Commission accredited 37 degree programmes for the College, and approval was secured for the College to run Master degree in the next five years.

These accomplishments have reinforced growing optimism within and beyond the institution that the Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze may, in the foreseeable future, attain the status of a Federal University of Technical Education.

Among the enduring symbols of Professor Okoli's legacy is the Igwe P. N. Eze Road, the first asphalted road constructed on the College's main campus since the institution's establishment in 1990. These infrastructural landmarks continues
to sign-post purposeful leadership and development.

As the mantle of leadership passes to Dr Virginia Nonye Ejezie, expectations remain high that her administrative capacity, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and strategic vision would further consolidate the gains already made and propel the institution toward greater academic distinction and eventual university status.

Professor Theresa Obumnene Okoli departs office amidst widespread commendation and institutional goodwill, leaving behind a legacy that will remain etched in the history of the College for years to come.

FCET Umunze Admits Over 500 Students into Dual Mode Programme

Friday, 24 April 2026 marked a significant academic milestone in the history of Federal College of Education (Technical) Umunze, as the institution formally matriculated over 525 students into its newly approved Dual Mode programme. This development represents the first implementation of the initiative in the College’s 36-year history and signals a strategic transition in its academic mandate.

The Dual Mode framework authorizes eligible Colleges of Education to concurrently award the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor’s degrees, thereby broadening access to teacher education and enhancing academic progression pathways. The initiative also positions participating institutions to commence postgraduate programmes, including Master’s degrees, within a stipulated period of five years, subject to regulatory compliance.

The 37th/15th Joint Matriculation Ceremony was a memorable occasion for the Provost, Theresa Obumneme Okoli, as the College community gave thunderous applause in celebration of her meritorious service to the institution.
The ovation that lasted for more than 5 minutes represents her final matriculation in office ahead of the completion of her eight-year tenure in May 2026, a period widely associated with notable advancements in institutional infrastructure and human capital development.

In her address, Professor Okoli described the event as a “defining academic milestone,” emphasizing the merit-based selection process of the pioneer students of the Dual Mode programme. She noted that, following Federal Government approval, the College now operates a diversified academic portfolio comprising NCE, Degree, and Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) programmes.

Reaffirming the institution’s educational philosophy, the Provost underscored the College’s alignment with global human rights frameworks, particularly the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. She reiterated that access to education remains a fundamental right and not a privilege, while reaffirming the College’s commitment to inclusivity and equitable access.

Professor Okoli further commended the Federal Government for the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund), noting its potential to mitigate financial barriers and reduce student attrition rates. She encouraged students to take advantage of the scheme and urged parents and stakeholders to eschew institutional bias, stressing the parity between degrees awarded by Colleges of Education and those conferred by universities.

The formal administration of the matriculation oath was conducted by the College Registrar, Dr (Mrs) B.C. Nkah. Other principal officers in attendance included the Deputy Provost, Dr T.A.K. Nzeribe; the Bursar, Mr Ethelbert Echedo; and the College Librarian, Dr S.A. Agada.
Also represented at the ceremony was the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof Bond Anyaehie, through the Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof Ebele C. Okigbo. It is noteworthy that prior to the Federal Government’s approval of the Dual Mode system, the College operated its degree programmes in affiliation with the University since 2013.

The successful commencement of the Dual Mode programme underscores the College’s evolving role within Nigeria’s teacher education landscape and reinforces its aspiration toward becoming a centre of academic excellence and a full-fledged Federal University of Technical Education (FUTE).
