I sat down slowly on that old mat and for the first time in my life,i understood what it felt like to become invisible inside your own family but perhaps you are wondering how did a man who once had a car, a good job and his own apartment end up locked inside his younger sister's BQ?

A few years earlier,i worked in a bank. I wasn't rich but I was comfortable. I dressed well,drove my own car, lived in a decent estate and people respected me.

Then one day, a friend came to me with what he called a ‘sure business opportunity.’ "Oil and gas". He told me the returns would be huge. He convinced me to take a ₦4 million loan and i trusted him,trust that almost destroyed my life.

I signed the documents,the money came and then,he disappeared. His phone went off,his house was empty. Nobody knew where he had gone.

The bank didn't care about my excuses because the loan was in my name. Soon,everything started collapsing. First, my employer suspended me then they fired me and the debt followed me everywhere.

My phone stopped ringing,and people who once called me ‘Boss’ suddenly became too busy to answer my calls. When my rent expired, I started begging relatives and friends for help.

Imagine waking up one morning,you stretch your body, reach for the door, turn the handle and it doesn't open. You try again,nothing. You knock,no answer. You bang harder,still nothing. Then suddenly, you realize something terrifying. Someone has locked you inside from the outside but that wasn't even the worst part. The worst part was discovering why. My name is Emmanuel,i was 34 years old, unemployed, broke, unmarried and living inside the small BQ behind my younger sister's house.There was no bed in that room,just an old mat on the floor. The fan had stopped working months earlier and that morning, I woke up sweating heavily.

I picked up my phone and called my sister. No answer. I called again,nothing. Then I sent a message to her husband and it delivered but no response. At that point, fear started crawling through my body.

Had something happened?

Were they angry with me?

Why would anybody lock me inside?

For almost two hours, I sat there confused.

Then… Knock. Knock. I froze. Someone was standing outside, It was my sister but she didn't open the door and instead, she whispered through the wooden door: ‘Broda… please manage inside today.

"Why?” but there was a long silence. Then she said something that completely broke me.

My in-laws are around,they are big people and i don't want them to ask who you are or why you are still unmarried at your age.’ For a few seconds, I couldn't speak,I just stared at the door. Then she walked away and that was when i understood that they weren't protecting me,they were hiding me because they were ashamed of me.

"How did Nigerian Christianity arrive at a point where some of its most prominent leaders are associated with aircraft worth millions, while many ordinary worshippers are still struggling to pay rent, school fees, medical bills and even put food on the table?"

1️⃣ Bishop David Oyedepo who is the founder of Living Faith Church, popularly known as Winners’ Chapel.

5️⃣ Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor,In 2012, members of Word of Life Bible Church presented him with a Bombardier Challenger 601 as a birthday and ministry-anniversary gift. Oritsejafor later defended the aircraft as a necessity for his ministry rather than merely a luxury. Years later, the aircraft became the subject of another controversy after it was used by parties who had leased it; Oritsejafor has maintained that he did not control what happened after the aircraft entered the leasing arrangement.

5️⃣Pastor Lazarus Muoka,founder of The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries, has also appeared in recent reporting involving private-aircraft travel. In May 2026, reports showed Muoka and his wife arriving at a church programme after travelling by jet.

Her phone received a message.

It came from Raphael's phone.

For a moment, she probably thought this was the breakthrough they had been waiting for.

Maybe Raphael was finally trying to communicate.

But the message was not from Raphael.

According to the account, the people behind the disappearance instructed her to download an application so they could communicate privately.

Then came the demand.

A demand that would send shockwaves through the family.

₦100 million.

One hundred million naira.

That was the ransom reportedly demanded for Raphael's release.

Imagine receiving a message from your missing brother's phone…

only to discover that the people controlling it were demanding ₦100 million.

The family now had a terrible problem.

They didn't know exactly where Raphael was.

They didn't know how many people were involved.

They didn't know whether he was still alive.

And they didn't know whether paying the ransom would actually bring him home.

This is the disturbing story of Raphael, a 22-year-old university student whose ordinary Friday outing reportedly turned into a nightmare that his family would never forget.
