How to set up your graph sheet like a pro
“Messy setup, messy score, don’t start plotting until your foundation is right.”
I always tell my students that how you begin your graph affects how it ends. You can get everything else right, but if your setup is clumsy, unclear, or squeezed, it weakens the whole presentation.
Here’s how to set up your graph sheet like a pro, even before drawing a single line:
✅ Start with a clean title
Write your experiment title at the top of the sheet. For example: “A graph of Current (I) against Voltage (V)”
✅ Use full space wisely
Avoid plotting in a small corner. Use at least three-quarters of the graph paper. This makes your graph readable and accurate.
✅ Draw bold, straight axes
Use a ruler to draw neat vertical and horizontal axes. Make sure they cross properly at the origin (0,0), unless the data requires a different starting point.
✅ Label both axes clearly
Include the variable name and unit. For example:
Current (A) on the vertical axis
Voltage (V) on the horizontal axis
✅ Choose a suitable scale
Pick a scale that fits your data and makes it easy to plot. Stick to even numbers (e.g. 1, 2, 5, 10).
✅ Mark points at equal intervals
No guesswork. Count your boxes carefully and spread the values evenly across the graph.

WAEC examiners notice when a student takes the time to set up their graph properly. It tells them you’re not just cramming, you understand what you’re doing.
This part of your Physics practical is what gives structure to the rest. Don’t rush it. Do it like a pro.
