Storied Lesson 1
My name is Clement Femi Eight, but what happened to me today was rather inclement–so unpleasant. I hurried out of my bed to meet Madam Harridan Curmudgeon, known to her neighbours as a bad-tempered old woman, for a job interview. I got to her house in my usual sanguine, or optimistic, self. And fair enough, my first sight was exquisite, exceptionally beautiful. I met her first daughter, Vixen (an ill-tempered woman); however, she is pulchritudinous, having taken exceptional beauty as her express duty. But that duty was one too onerous–too difficult–for me to behold. She was clothed in a gossamer (see-through) gown that turned my mirth, my cheerfulness, into a sudden frown. But I had not seen anything yet!

Vixen was closely followed by her equally ill-tempered younger sisters, Termagant and Shrew. The three of them had been embroiled in a fracas, a noisy argument, just before my arrival. Everything was still boiling. I heard old Mr. Curmudgeon, their bad-tempered father, letting out a jet of invective (yes, verbal abuse). And needless to say, the sisters' gowns were not only diaphanous, translucent like Vixen’s, but also torn from the family fracas. But their mother, unperturbed (undisturbed) by the show of shame, tried to show me (a living thing) the way into the living room, saying: “Let's let in Clement uhm, Femi Eight.” Of course, I had become literally effeminate by the inclement atmosphere. Since “I had not seen anything yet,” I had to tergiversate–I had to turn back. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, leaving my footwear behind. How quickly the living thing in me became a “leaving” thing! Passersby must have thought that I had just run …. But I had actually hurriedly run away from Madam Harridan and madness!

Of course, I came back home with my feet; but I was quite effete, tired in and out. And guess what? I just looked up the meanings of the names of the characters I had encountered and realized that they are aptronyms–names amusingly suitable for their bearers. What is more, I believe that you, my patient reader, have inadvertently (unknowingly) learnt/revisited the meanings of many difficult words in one “storied” lesson. I "caught" you, right? Laughs ….

Special Rule for Spelling Receive, Believe, etc.

Any time letters "e" and "i" follow each other in a word, and the two letters produce a long /i:/ (ee) sound, you should write letter "i" before letter "e" except when the two letters come immediately after letter "c". That is, if the two letters come immediately after letter "c", write letter "e" before letter "i".

In summary, write letter "i" before letter "e" except after letter "c" whenever letters "e" and "i" follow each other and produce a long /i:/ (ee) sound in a word.

That is why we write believe, receipt, relieve, receive, relief, belief, achieve, conceive, perceive, ceiling, etc. as we do.
Note: The "e" and "i" which come together and seem to defy this rule in words like conscience, science, prescient and nescient do not produce the long /i:/ (ee) sound.

If you know other words that follow or defy this rule, kindly write them in the comment section.
