Your child may not need another worksheet. They may need a better learning experience.

A worksheet can practise a skill.
But real learning can happen when a child has to make a decision, explain an idea, solve a problem, manipulate something, communicate with another person or try again after getting it wrong.
Early learning is much bigger than paper.
A child counting plates while setting the table is learning mathematics.
A child negotiating whose turn it is is developing communication and personal, social and emotional skills.
A child building a tower and changing the design after it falls is developing problem-solving and persistence.
Don't ask only, “Did my child complete the activity?”
Ask, “What was my child thinking while doing it?”

The most important question after an early years lesson isn't ‘What did I teach?

It is: “What changed in the way this child thinks, communicates, moves, solves problems or interacts?”
Because teaching a child isn't simply delivering information.
As educators, we are shaping experiences that help children build language, confidence, independence, curiosity and the ability to think.
That means I don't only plan what I will teach.
I ask:
What do I want the child to notice?
What do I want them to attempt?
What do I want them to explain?
What do I want them to eventually do independently?
That's the difference between delivering activities and designing learning experiences.

One of my favourite moments in a reading lesson is watching a learner explain how she arrived at an answer.

In this clip, my learner is working on identifying the main idea by interpreting pictures. She’s not just picking an answer; she’s observing, making connections and thinking through what the pictures are communicating.

That’s the kind of reading skill we want to build: understanding, reasoning and confidence.

“A child is as limited as his/her teacher. Children can only go as far as their teacher.” — Dr. Isa

This statement got me thinking.

In this context, “child” refers specifically to early learners. At the early years stage, teachers play a significant role in shaping how children learn, think, explore, and see what is possible.

But here’s the question I’d love to hear your honest opinion on:

Should this statement also apply to higher-grade learners or to ALL learners, regardless of age?

Is a learner’s growth limited by the teacher’s knowledge, expectations and teaching approach? Or can learners go far beyond the limitations of the teacher guiding them?

One of my learners roasted me during class... and honestly, I deserved it! 😂

I was teaching letter sounds.
Feeling very serious.
Very professional.
I asked,
"Can you say the /m/ sound?"
My learner looked at me...
paused...
and said,
"Ms. Lydia... you're making too many funny faces."
😂😂
I couldn't stop laughing.
But here's the thing.
Those "funny faces" matter.
Children learn sounds by watching our mouths.
So yes...
Sometimes teaching phonics means looking a little silly.
And that's okay.
Because if acting silly helps a child become a confident reader...
I'll happily keep making funny faces.

The smile on her face at the end said it all... 🥹❤️

When we started this lesson, she wasn't sure what to do with 'ay.'

We practised the sound, built a few words together, and before long, she was confidently spelling play, lay, stay, day, and more... all on her own.

That little moment of confidence is why I love teaching.

Children don't become strong readers by memorising hundreds of words. They become readers when they understand the patterns that make words work.

Today it was 'ay.' Tomorrow, it'll be another pattern. That's how confident readers are built, one sound at a time.

Which has a greater impact on a child:
Praise like "I'M PROUD OF YOU" or ENCOURAGEMENT from parents/teachers?

Most people think one matters more than the other, but the truth is... both are powerful.
The same way a child lights up when they hear their parent say, "I'm proud of you," is the same way they feel when they hear a teacher say, "Good job."

One gives them a sense of belonging. The other reminds them they're making progress.
That's why I believe there should be a balance. Motivation and encouragement go hand in hand. When children consistently hear words that affirm their effort, they become more confident, more resilient, and more willing to keep learning.

Never underestimate the power of your words. To a child, they can shape confidence for a lifetime.

Reading the Same Book Again Isn't a Waste!

If your child has asked you to read the same bedtime story for the 27th time... don't hide the book just yet! 😂

Parents...
Can I tell you a secret?
Children LOVE repetition.
Meanwhile...
Parents are thinking,
"If I have to read this book one more time, I might start reciting it in my sleep!" 😂

But here's what's actually happening.
Every time your child hears that same story...
They're learning.
They're predicting words.
They're noticing sentence patterns.
They're building vocabulary.
They're growing confidence.
Reading isn't just about new books.
Sometimes...
The old favourite is doing the biggest job.
So next time your child says,
"Again!"
Smile...
Even if it's a very tired smile.
