Aspect Ratio ≠ Video Resolution! 🎥

A lot of people confuse these two, but they are not the same thing.

Aspect ratio simply describes the relationship between the width and height of your video. The horizontal/width value comes first.

📐 16:9 → Landscape
📱 9:16 → Portrait
📸 4:5 → Common social media portrait format
🖼️ 5:4 → Opposite orientation

So when you see 16:9 or 9:16, you’re looking at the shape/proportion of the frame, not the actual pixel size.

Video resolution, on the other hand, refers to the actual dimensions of the video, such as 1920 × 1080 or 1080 × 1920.

And if your camera isn’t configured to record vertically, you may need to rotate/reframe your footage during post-production.

🎬 Know your aspect ratio. Shoot intentionally. Edit smarter.

STOP SHOOTING EVERYTHING AT F/1.8 JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT A “CINEMATIC” LOOK. 🎥

Shallow depth of field is a creative tool, not a requirement for every shot.

Sometimes f/2.8, f/3.2 or even higher will give you a better, more usable image—especially for interviews where your subject needs to stay consistently in focus.

Cinematic ≠ Everything Blurred.

Understand your lens. Understand your subject. Understand what the scene requires.

Don’t let the aperture control you. You control the aperture. 🎬

ONE BAD CUT CAN MAKE A GREAT SCENE LOOK UNPROFESSIONAL. 🎬

That’s why visual continuity is one of the things you must pay attention to as a cinematographer and editor.

You can move from a wide shot to a medium shot or a close-up, but the action, position, props, costumes, eyelines, and timing should still make sense.

If a character starts an action in one shot, the next shot should naturally continue that action.

Even in interviews, continuity matters. If someone is speaking, your cut should support what they are saying—not create confusion.

Good cinematography is not just about beautiful shots. It’s about making every shot connect and serving the story.

Don’t just capture shots. Capture continuity.

🎥 Shoot with intention.
🎬 Edit with purpose.
📖 Tell the story better.

YOUR CAMERA MONITOR CAN LIE. YOUR WAVEFORM DOESN’T. 🎬

Sometimes your eyes can deceive you, but the waveform gives you an objective reading of your exposure—from shadows to highlights.

As a cinematographer, don’t just expose based on what looks good on the monitor. Check your waveform.

Also, keep your exposure consistent across different scenes. If your indoor exposure is A, your outdoor exposure should be intentionally balanced to match.

This makes colour grading easier and keeps your footage visually consistent.

Expose correctly. Shoot consistently.

RACK FOCUS 🎥 — When Focus Becomes Part of the Story.

Rack focus is the intentional shift of focus from one subject to another within the same shot.

With a manual lens, this requires precision, timing, and control. And this is where the Focus Puller (1st AC) becomes essential.

The focus puller monitors the subjects’ positions and smoothly adjusts the lens focus ring to move the audience’s attention exactly where the director wants it.

It’s not just about making an image sharp.

It’s about controlling what the audience sees, when they see it.

🎬 Cinematography is storytelling through images—and sometimes, the story is in the focus.
