STRATEGIES TO OVERCOMING
MARRIAGE CHALLENGES - contd.
By Pastor Okokon Ating
Categorically, as an advice to couples who are facing these challenges, they should first of all do the following:
Seek from God to know the purpose of the delay in pregnancy; Go through medical observation and check up to ascertain the reason(s) conception is being delayed; After adopting the first two advices, they should exercise patience to see what the outcome of the findings will be.
Keep on loving them-selves and fulfill marital responsibilities to one another as it is stipulated in the Word of God; Ref-use to listen to negative suggestions from friends and relatives; shun provo-cative slangs from the ad-versaries who will, from ti-me to time provoke their hearts.
Adopt Hannahâs method of enquiry to receive their heart desire (1 Samuel 1:1-18); Believe God that he shall bring to pass all their petitions.
INTIMACY
The Oxford Advanced Learnersâ Dictionary defines intimacy as âthe state of having a close personal relationship withâŠâ This close personal could be between friends, parents and the children, brothers, sisters, business partners, a husband and wife. In marriage institution, there are many things which stand as sources of power or pivot wheel on which a husband and the wife get united in life.
Here are some of them to consider: There are some individuals who are united to their spouse due to genuine love within them; Some may be because of the beautiful or the handsomeness of the spouse, or the s*xual satisfaction derived from each other; Some may be due to their financial and educational status; While others may be due to their cultural background; Some ties may be due to their religious beliefs.
Whatever may be the yardstick that intimately joined the couple together; we are much concerned with the lasting components of intimacy which make marriages endure till the end of their lives on earth. In a typical African setting, we have some cultural school of thoughts in which when-ever there is a good intimacy between husband and wife, they quickly concluded that something is wrong. A typical African person would like to say that such a man is a fool for giving his wife total attention. Some will even address the husband with such slang as being a âwoman wrapperâ.
There are some cultures that view women as child-ren and may not like to interact together with them, even at their own convenience or leisure time. Some family like posing unnecessary interference just to disturb the peace of the couple and some do not take intimacy as part of ma-rriage at all. For some, the only area of their intimacy is when it comes to s*x matters for procreation. When it comes to caring, the matter comes to a close.
Some cultures welcome intimacy because the woman has become the mother of children and the attention will only be for the children while the husband may check out for a new brand lady outside for enjoyment. Some cultures too exhibit lack of intimacy due to barrenness.

STRATEGIES TO OVERCOMING
MARRIAGE CHALLENGES
By Pastor Okokon Ating
A man who loves his spouse and had agreed to live with her forever, needs to find a solution at all cost to the fruitfulness of himself and the wife. Some men would prefer that their wives should be the only one who requires medical check ups, or spiritual consultations for possible solution which shouldnât be for her alone but an effort driven by partners.
Where there is understan-ding between the couple on this issue of childless-ness, separation from one another may be difficult. Hence, continuous unity of the union is guaranteed as both spouses have clearer knowledge of the delay either medically or spiritually.
There are many biblical families that had delay in childbearing, yet they lived happily with themselves. Although, it was not rev-ealed to them then whether their infertility was due to sickness from the husband or the wife, exc-ept in some instances which were for a purpose. Referring to Genesis 15:2-3 it is written: âAnd Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seedâŠ.Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age, And it ceases to be with Sarah after the manner of woman.â
Genesis 18:8: âAnd Abrah-am was a hundred years old, when his Son Isaac was born unto him.â Genesis 21:5: The above verses showed that Abra-ham and the wife were without a child from the beginning of their marria-ge, yet no discrepancies were mentioned between them. Not at all was there any name calling such as witch or wizard or even accusing the woman of being the cause of their childlessness.
They waited for Godâs time faithfully, until God visited them to do as He promised.
Sometimes, couplesâ delay in having a child or children on time might be for a purpose, as it was to Abraham and his wife. Despite the delay, Abraham had the foresight that he will have a child at last. This was Godâs response to his question in
Genesis 15:2-3 . In the fourth verse, God said to Abraham: ââŠThis shall not be thi-ne heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heirâ.
It is good for a couple who is experiencing problem of infertility to try and know much about their fertility standard by being diagnosed medic-ally. They should also assess their spiritual status through prayer, seeking from God why pregnancy is delayed and asking for mercy. Read also the story of Elkanah and Hannah in I Samuel 1:4-8 . Despite the fact that there was a delay for Hannah having a child, yet Elkanah was not buffeted by this situation but loved her and responded to marital responsibilities that concerned Hannah.
I want to encourage you to always hold on to God and trust Him for He can build a broken marriage and he can also create a happy Union. God bless you.

AN APPETITE FOR GODâS WORD
âHis Word can cut through our spirits.â
Hebrews 4:12
AS You read the Bible, God will give you strength and guidance for your life that you simply canât get any other way. Eliphaz said to Job the patriarch: âHe bruises, but He binds up; He wounds, but His hands make wholeâ (Job 5:18 NKJV). Thatâs what God does to you as you read the Scriptures. âHis Word can cut through our spirits.â Others see what we do, but when we get alone with God and open the Scriptures, He reveals to us what we are. He brings to the surface long-standing and unresolved issues, and helps us to deal with them. He confronts us over our stubborn habits and shows us how to conquer them. He pinpoints our selfish and unloving attitudes, giving us a chance to repent and change our ways.
The old Quakers had a saying: âSin will keep you from your Bible, and your Bible will keep you from sin.â You say, âBut when I get up in the morning, Iâm so busy that I donât have time to read the Bible.â Then read it when you come home at night! You say, âBy the time I get home from work at night, Iâm exhausted and canât concentrate on anything!â You must rearrange your priorities. If you spend hours watching television, surely you can spend some time each day reading your Bible. The truth is that we make time for the things that we want, that we value, and that we enjoy.
So, ask God to give you a greater appetite for His Word. Then read your Bible, and watch your appetite for it grow!

FRIENDSHIP
âHe who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.â
Proverbs 13:20
The storyâs told of a farmer who was being pestered every day by a flock of crows in his cornfield. Deciding heâd had enough, he loaded his shotgun and crawled unseen along the fencerow, determined to blow those pesky crows out of the sky. Turns out this farmer had a very sociable parrot that indiscriminately made friends with everybody, and seeing the flock of crows he flew over and joined them in an effort to be friendly. The farmer saw the crows but didnât see his parrot, so he took careful aim, fired, then jumped up and ran over to see how many crows he had shot. Lo and behold, there was his parrot lying on the ground with a broken wing and a chipped beak, but still alive. The farmer tenderly picked him up and brought him home, where his children ran out to meet him. Seeing the injured parrot, they tearfully asked, âDaddy, what happened?â But before he could answer, the parrot spoke up: âThatâs what you get for hanging out with the wrong crowd.â You can never be at the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing, if youâre with the wrong crowd. And as a parent, you need to teach this to your children. Monitor their Internet use, and warn them about predators who deliberately prowl online looking for âfriendsâ. Web-based horror stories of children being hurt and led astray are multiplying daily. If this sounds strong and urgent - thatâs because it is!
