The plot of the Nigerian general elections took a sudden twist last weekend, when the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, announced a postponement owing to the unavailability of security agencies to offer protection during the conduct of the elections. According to him, the Service Chiefs have unanimously reiterated that the safety and security of INEC’s operations cannot be guaranteed for the 14th and 28 February initially slated for the elections, adding that they would need at least six weeks within which to conclude a major military operation against the insurgency in the Northeast.
