I remember when my friend Ben was preparing to write the IELTS exam. Like most people, he had spoken with some few persons he knew had written the test to find out how easy or difficult the test is. Unfortunately, most of them had told him the test was difficult, wishing him luck in his exams.

Ben had every reason to be fearful and discouraged – he was not eloquent in the English language, but the test was important; he needed it to relocate abroad.

The exams came, Ben sat for it and he conquered it. When I think about my friend Ben and his IELTS success story, I am reminded of the fact that hard work and diligence makes the impossible possible. Ben had studied and practiced hard for the test.

In her book Frankenstein, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley had wisely noted that “a mind of moderate capacity which closely pursues one study must infallibly arrive at proficiency in that study”.

You must know that a high band score in the IELTS exam is not reserved for the eloquent English speaker (there is no room for discouragement for you if you are not eloquent!). To achieve the required band score, the most important thing you need to do is to study and practice long before you sit for your exam.

It’s easy to conclude that achieving an excellent score in an English language exam like the IELTS exam is as easy as pie, especially when you have been communicating in English for the most part of your life. This can’t be any further from the truth. Having a high band score in the IELTS exam is very easy but the extent of its ease is directly proportionate to the effort that you have put into preparing for the exam. One of the reasons a lot of people fail to meet the required band score in their IELTS exam is because they overlook the importance of adequate practice. If you are preparing to write the IELTS exam, it means that you should not practice a few days to the exam or worse still, walk into the exam room without you having practiced at all, relying on luck or fate. These would not do but your effort will. I’ll leave you with a quote by Walter Scott – “All men who have turned out worth anything have had the chief hand in their own education”.
